AMES, Iowa - The fourth-ranked Iowa State gymnastics team scored a 195.725 to take second at the NCAA North Central Regional Championships, qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year. Iowa State, the top seed, which hosted the regional event for the first time in school history, will advance to the championships held in Corvallis, Ore., on April 20-22.
Second-seeded Arizona State won the team title (196.650) and also qualified for the NCAA national meet. Third-seed Arizona (195.400) came in third, No. 4-seed Denver (195.400) garnered fourth, No. 5-seed Minnesota (194.650) placed fifth, while sixth-seed BYU (192.125) rounded out the team competition.
"This is the biggest pressure meet of the year," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Our vault and floor teams really performed well and we are excited to make another trip to nationals."
ISU came out firing on all cylinders on floor exercise, entering the event as the No. 2-ranked floor team in the nation. The Cyclones posted a 49.350, the top score on any event in the entire meet. Junior Janet Anson claimed the floor title outright, scoring a 9.925. The Cyclone senior trio of Kacey Oiness, Erin Dethloff and Laura-Kay Powell each turned in 9.900s to tie for third.
Iowa State then moved to vault, where it posted a solid 49.075. Anson and Denver's Casey Dobyns each recorded a 9.900 to share first-place honors. Anson entered the event as the No. 2 ranked vaulter nationally.
"Our vault went really well tonight," Kindler said. "We usually start out on this event, but it was really good to see our kids follow up an excellent floor performance by sticking their vaults."
The Cyclones set out a bye round before moving to bars, where Dethloff anchored the team's 48.750. The senior from Omaha, Neb., finished in a four-way tie for first as she posted a 9.900.
ISU finished the night on beam where it stumbled a bit and was forced to count one fall for a final tally of 48.550.
"We haven't counted a fall in any event for two-and-a-half months," Kindler said. "Luckily it didn't matter and we can put this behind us."
Freshman Ashley Kent led the way for the Cyclones on the beam, putting together a second-place 9.875.
Dethloff took second in the all-around (39.400), as Arizona State's Ashley Kelly took the title with a 39.400.
Kindler was named Big 12 Regional Coach of the Year following the completion of the event.
Iowa State now has three NCAA regional runner-up finishes (2000, 2005, 2006). The Cyclones took eighth last year at the NCAA Championship in Auburn, Ala., the school's highest ever finish.
