AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's tennis team was honored with the highest women's team GPA award at ISU's annual Scholar-Athlete banquet April 24. The Cyclones received the highest GPA trophy which travels from year to year to the team with the highest grade point average. Last year the award was given to women's basketball team.
Elizabeth Chermel, Charlotte Ljungkrantz, Jill Palen, Danielle Uscinski, Chrissy Derouin, Caitlin Loprinzi and Kara Hickey all received the Iowa State Scholar-Athlete Award. To receive this honor a student must have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average or a 3.00 for the prior two semesters. Seniors Chermel and Ljungkrantz received the Scholar-Athlete Award for the fourth time and juniors Palen and Uscinski received the honor for the third time. Loprinzi and Derouin, both sophomore, earned the award each for the second time, while freshman Hickey received the award for the first time.
Palen was also voted by her tennis teammates as the 2005-06 All-Around Academic Achievement Award winner. Each team at Iowa State is represented by one student athlete based on the following criteria: the student must have one of the top GPAs on the team; made significant athletic contributions; shown leadership; and participated in community service.
Palen, a native of Rochester, Minn., holds a 3.76 GPA in exercise and sport science. She has played at No. 1 singles and doubles all spring.
