AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team had an open layup with just over a second remaining, but couldn't get it to fall, suffering a 45-44 loss to Oklahoma State in Big 12 Conference action Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones led by 10 points, 39-29, with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Cowgirls slowly whittled the lead down, taking a 42-41 lead on a three-pointer by Taylor Hardeman with 3:34 remaining, and a four-point lead, 45-41 with 1:21 left. ISU senior Megan Ronhovde hit a three with 1:02 on the clock and after a three-point miss and foul, Iowa State still had a chance to win the game after OSU committed a turnover under the ISU basket. But the Cyclones couldn't get the layup to fall and after getting the ball back, ISU had a miscue on the inbounds pass with just over a second left that finished off the Cowgirl win.
Iowa State falls to 13-4 on the season, dropping its third straight Big 12 Conference game to fall to 1-3 in the league, and lost for the first time at Hilton this season. Oklahoma State improved to 14-2 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
“I don't want to take anything away from Oklahoma State, they did a great job,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “They did the things they had to do to win the game at the end, but it's one of those times when you are a little bit lost for words to understand what the problem with our team is.”
Sophomore Nicky Wieben nearly had a double-double for Iowa State with 15 points and nine rebounds, while senior Lyndsey Medders nearly went for a triple-double with 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists on the night. The Cyclones, however, struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 29.6 percent (16-54) from the field, 26.7 percent from beyond the arc (8-30) and 40 percent from the free throw line (4-10).
Oklahoma State was led by Danielle Green with 13 points and seven rebounds, but the Cowgirls were balanced with eight different people scoring in their winning effort. OSU shot just 34.6 percent from the field, including a 40.9 percent mark in the first half, and outrebounded ISU, 41-35.
Iowa State took a 23-21 halftime lead, despite a rough first half. The Cyclones were down 19-13 after Oklahoma State hit three early treys, but ISU went on a 10-0 run which began with five minutes left in the half to take a 23-19 advantage. The Cowgirls got a steal and a basket with 22 seconds on the clock to cut Iowa State's lead to two going into the locker room.
Iowa State will play host to Texas at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.
