Medders Named CLASS Award Candidate

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior point guard Lyndsey Medders has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2006-07 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award is presented annually to an NCAA Division I male and female senior basketball player who excel both on and off the court.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched during the 2001-02 season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring.

Sponsored by Lowe's, the award has already reached its sixth year. Finalists will be selected based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. These areas of excellence are identified under the categories of classroom, character and community, as well as the candidate's performance and team loyalty on the court.

The greater emphasis on the off-court achievements of the candidate reflects Lowe's commitment to helping young people build successful careers and encouraging students to use their skills to make an impact in life.

Medders joins Nebraska's Kiera Hardy and Texas' Tiffany Jackson as the only three Big 12 representatives in the final 30.

A Los Angeles native, Medders has demonstrated all four qualities required to become a finalist for this award. She holds a 3.44 cumulative grade-point average in sports management and is on schedule to graduate in the Spring of 2007. Medders has demonstrated character of the highest quality and is extensively involved in the community, participating in everything from reading and making speeches in numerous schools throughout the Ames area, to spending time at Green Hills Retirement Community and working with Special Olympics athletes.

Her on-court achievements are well documented, leading the nation as a junior in assists per game and ranking in the top five nationally throughout this season. Medders has set the Iowa State school record for assists, which she continues to rewrite through each passing game, and is ISU's 10^th all-time leading scorer with 1,246 career points. She ranks fourth in Big 12 history in career assists and has earned numerous honors in her senior season as well as throughout her career.

Ten finalists will be selected in early February. These finalists will be featured in special vignettes during college basketball telecasts on CBS. As always, the winner will be announced by Dick Enberg on CBS during the Final Four broadcast.
