AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Tennis Association awarded Suzy Shierholz with the Iowa Tennis Association President's Award last Friday at the Iowa State Pro Am tennis event.
The award is given annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to growing and promoting the game of tennis in the state of Iowa. Suzy served as the Commissioner for the first ever Special Olympic National Games, held on the Forker courts on Iowa State's Campus. This past July, the games provided opportunities for over 100 Special Olympic athletes from around the nation. The tournament was awarded the Event of the Year by the USTA Missouri Valley Tennis Association this past December.
Shierholz has served as the tennis Director of the Special Olympics Iowa Games the past 10 years and has been a volunteer high school assistant coach. She is the director of the Ames Jr. Open, assisted with the Ames Tennis Association, and is an avid player herself.
The Iowa State Pro Am was a huge success as over 100 tennis patrons played doubles with Iowa State tennis players. Several Iowa State coaches of other sports took the courts to play with Ames area tennis players as well.
