AMES, Iowa—The Iowa State men's track team had a short, but successful first day with two first-place relay teams at the ISU Open held at the Lied Recreation Facility.
Leading off the day for the Cyclones was the distance medley relay consisting of Brandon Rooney, James Robinson, David Lantz, and Jayden Russ. The team took the title with a time of 9:59.16. Rooney took the lead for the Cyclones on the first leg and his teammates remained in the lead the rest of the race.
The Iowa State sprinters demonstrated consistency in the 4x300-meter relay. The team consisting of newcomer Jared Lewis, sophomore Gabe Kimpson and seniors Elijah Braimah and Jared Graham took the lead out of the blocks and led the whole way en route to the crown. The team finished with a time of 2:16.08. At the ISU Holiday Preview in December, the Cyclones finished second in the event against a strong Nike team.
“It was fun winning those,” said men's head coach Steve Lynn. “Both relay teams did a really good job today and it was a good way to start. One of the most impressive performances of the day was Brandon Rooney. He's just a sophomore and he's been training really well, but you just don't know how they're going to perform when they step on the track.”
Lewis also competed in the long jump for only the second time in his career. He had a best jump of 22-11 ¼ to take third in the event. Lewis was less than three inches from the first-place winner, James Ewer who had a jump of 23-2.
The ISU Open will continue Saturday at the Lied Recreation Facility with running events starting at 10:25 a.m. with the women's 3,000-meter run and field events starting at 11:30 a.m. with the women's high jump. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay, which is set to begin at 6 p.m.
