IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team started off their 2007 campaign on the right track with a with a solid performance in singles and doubles Friday at the Hawkeye Invitational at the West Campus Tennis-Recreation Center.
The Cyclones started out the day by squaring off against instate rival, Northern Iowa, in doubles action. The Cyclones were victorious in all four of their matches against the Panthers. Senior Eve Soriano paired up with sophomore Kara Hickey to defeat the UNI duo of Meghana Paritala and Agnese Pukse, 8-6. Junior Chrissy Derouin teamed up with senior Danielle Uscinski to defeat the pair of Mariana Muraca and Taynara Moraes by a score of 9-7. Jill Palen paired up with Caitlin Loprinzi in doubles action and defeated UNI's Sampada Kanade and Carolina Hannes, 8-5. The freshman duo of Alyssa Palen and Dori Losonczy knocked off Meredith Esbeck and Samantha Schnobel, 8-6.
In singles play, the Cyclones squared off with the Northern Illinois Huskies. The Cyclones came away with four victories against the Huskies. Jill Palen, Eve Soriano, Kara Hickey, and Alyssa Palen all recorded singles wins on Friday.
The Cyclones will resume play at the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m as they face tournament host Iowa in doubles action.
