AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team was picked sixth by the Big 12 Conference coaches in the 2007-08 preseason poll.
The Cyclones finished tied for fourth with Nebraska in the final Big 12 standings last season, after being picked fifth by the coaches in the preseason poll. Iowa State is coming off a 26-9 season and was 10-6 in Big 12 action. The Cyclones made it to the title game of the Big 12 Championship before falling to Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. ISU earned an NCAA Tournament berth, advancing to the second round in Minneapolis, Minn.
Texas A&M was picked by the league coaches to win the regular-season crown with seven first-place votes. Oklahoma was chosen as a close second with five first-place votes (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team). The two teams tied for the regular-season title last season with matching 13-3 league records. The preseason selection has won at least a share of the Big 12 title in five of the previous 11 seasons. A preseason poll was not conducted in the first year of the conference.
“Texas A&M and OU have great returning teams and it sure looks like a year where the Big 12 will have great balance,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I believe that from top to bottom the Big 12 will be the best conference in the nation. I think the fans who follow our teams will be in for a fun year of hoops.”
Baylor and Texas were chosen ahead of Iowa State in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The remainder of the poll included Nebraska seventh, Kansas State and Texas Tech tied for eighth, Kansas 10th, Colorado 11th and Missouri 12th.
Toccara Ross is Iowa State's lone returning senior. The Cyclones also return 2006-07 All-Big 12 honorable-mention pick Nicky Wieben. ISU has three newcomers on its roster and will have the task of replacing a pair of four-year starters in Lyndsey Medders and Megan Ronhovde in 2007-08.
