Cyclones Earn 1-1 Tie Against No. 3 Texas

AMES, Iowa ? Elise Reid scored her third goal in as many Big 12 Conference match-ups as the Iowa State (6-1-3, 2-0-1 Big 12) soccer team played No. 3 Texas (8-1-2, 1-0-1 Big 12) to a 1-1 tie, Friday night at ISU Soccer Complex. Ann Gleason (6-1-3) made seven saves in the draw.

The Cyclones are now riding a five-game unbeaten streak, including the last three in the Big 12 Conference. The 2-0-1 Big 12 mark continues the best conference start in ISU history.

“Overall, I'm very proud of our team effort,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We came out and we didn't play scared of the No. 3 team in the country. We came out as Iowa State and we came out to win a ballgame. We're going to go out there with that attitude every game and if people want to look as us as the underdog, I love it. But we've just got to put an emphasis on improving. Right now, the focus is already on (Sunday's match against) Colorado.”

Reid got the scoring started in the 22^nd minute, taking Brittanie Waddell's centering pass and beating her defender into the box before sending a shot into the top right corner past Texas goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger. She now has a team-high five goals and 11 points. Waddell leads the Cyclones with four assists.

The Longhorns answered just over nine minutes later as Courtney Gaines sent her corner kick from the left corner directly into the right side of the net.

Both teams had opportunities the rest of the way, but the final 78 minutes went scoreless. Texas had a flurry in front of the net with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime, but couldn't put any of their shots away. Stephanie Gibson's header hit the right post before Kelsey Carpenter gathered the rebound and sent a shot just wide.

Carpenter had another open look in the box in the second overtime, but this time she hit the left post before the Cyclones cleared the ball.

The Cyclones weren't without missed opportunities, either. Erin Witte's shot from the top left corner of the 18-yard box in the seventh minute of the first half was earmarked for the net before Pfenninger got just enough of her hand on the ball to deflect it off the underside of the crossbar before gaining possession outside the net, despite the rest of her body leaning over the goal line.

Pfenninger (8-1-2) made two saves. The Longhorns had a decided advantage in shots, 20-5. However, only eight were directed on net.

The Cyclones travel to Boulder, Colo. Sunday to take on the Colorado Buffaloes. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. (CT) start.
