Cyclone Soccer Ties Nebraska, 2-2

AMES, Iowa ? Jordan Bishop and Stephanie Kaphingst each scored first-half goals as the Iowa State soccer team (8-6-4, 4-4-2 Big 12) tied Nebraska (5-10-4, 1-8-1 Big 12), 2-2, to conclude the regular season.

Ann Gleason (8-6-4) made nine saves to prevent further damage while Nebraska's Jessica Mills (5-10-4) corralled four saves.

With the tie and an Oklahoma State victory on Thursday, the Cyclones earned the eighth seed in the Big 12 Championship. The eighth position means a first-round pairing with Big 12 regular-season champion Texas A&M. The match, scheduled for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., will be contested at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.

“It was a good game,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “Nebraska is a talented team that came to compete in its last game. Their record does not indicate the strength of their team. I have a lot of respect for John Walker. He had his team ready to play and prepared a good game plan to go against us. Both teams had chances late and, overall, it was a very competitive, physical game.”

The Cyclones faced an early deficit as Nebraska's Selenia Iacchelli scored on a header off Alexa Cardona's cross from the right at the 17:28 mark. Iacchelli put the ball into the left side of the net past Gleason.

Iowa State responded quickly with Bishop's goal in the 24th minute. Lauren Fader sent a free kick into the box where Leslie Hill flicked it on to Bishop, who knocked it in with the back of her heel.

Just over five minutes later, Kaphingst gave ISU the lead. The senior connected on a header off Casey Bothwell's corner kick.

The Cyclones had another trio of opportunities in the 38^th minute as Fader's shot clanked off the crossbar before Mills made saves on Julie Chen and Lauren Odino's consecutive shots.

The Huskers scored the equalizer in the 57^th minute as Cardona took a cross from Shay Powell and put it past Gleason.

Both teams had opportunities in overtime. The Cyclones had the first chance in the 95^th minute as Odino sent a shot past Mills, with only the crossbar preventing the game-winner.

In the final minute of the second overtime, the Huskers put a pair of shots off the post. Iacchelli hit the first shot while Sari Raber collected the rebound and followed Iacchelli's example.

The Huskers outshot the Cyclones, 23-16, while corner kicks were even, 7-7.
