AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball swept through the American Family Insurance Cyclone Shoot-Out, winning three games in three days, including a 66-47 win over Hampton on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones closed out the regular-season nonconference slate with an 11-2 record with the win over the Lady Pirates. Iowa State will open Big 12 Conference play on Jan. 9 against Oklahoma. Hampton dropped to 5-6 with the loss.
“I told the team I'm really proud of what we've done up to this point,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “We've won 11 games. We've won all our instate games. We are undefeated at home. The two losses we have are to good teams on the road. Overall our players have played hard, they've played well. They are learning to play together."
Alison Lacey, the tournament MVP, led the Cyclones with 19 points, including five treys, and grabbed a season-high six rebounds. Nicky Wieben had 16 points for Iowa State, and tied her career high with seven blocked shots in the first half. Wieben now needs just four blocks to break the Iowa State career record. Amanda Nisleit led the Cyclones on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Heather Ezell tied her season-high with eight assists for the second consecutive day.
Iowa State shot 46.9 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from beyond the arc as the Cyclones sank nine treys for the contest. ISU held Hampton to 27 percent shooting and 19 percent shooting from outside. The Lady Pirates outrebounded the Cyclones, 41-34, marking just the third time this season Iowa State has suffered a deficit on the glass.
After falling behind 3-0, the Cyclones scored 16 unanswered point to take a 16-3 lead with 13 and a half minutes left in the half. The Lady Pirates sliced the lead to nine, 18-9, and hit a three to cut it to eight, 20-12, but the Cyclones hit back-to-back treys by Kelsey Bolte and Lacey to expand the lead to 14, 26-12. Bolte hit a pair of free throws to end the half with a 17-point ISU advantage, 37-20.
Early in the second half, Hampton cut the lead to 12, 37-25, but Iowa State answered with a 9-2 run, capped by a jumper in the paint by Lacey. Nisleit hit a pair of free throws with just under nine minutes to play to take a 26-point advantage, 59-33. Hampton cut the lead to 17 twice in the final three minutes, but Jocelyn Anderson hit a pair of field goals to put the game away for the Cyclones.
Lacey headlined the all-tournament team as the MVP, while Nisleit joined her. Bowling Green's Lauren Prochaska and Kate Achter were named to the all-tourney team along with Tennessee-Martin's Marie Goyette and Hampton's Artavia Burns.
The Cyclones will take nine days off from competition before opening Big 12 Conference play against defending league champion Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Hilton Coliseum. The two teams last met in the title game of the 2007 Big 12 Championship, where OU prevailed 67-60.
