STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Iowa State scored five second inning runs and used a strong performance from pitcher Alyssa Ransom to defeat previously unbeaten Mississippi State, 8-3, Saturday night at the Bulldog Round Robin. With the win, the Cyclones improve to 2-2 on the young season.

Ransom (1-1) struck out six and tossed a complete game to pick up her first win of the season.

The Cyclones were led by freshman Courtney Wray (2-for-4) and senior Fallon Johnson (1-for-3), who each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Mississippi State (3-1) used small ball to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs' first two hitters, Chelsea Bramlett and Nakita Boyce, bunted their way on base. Bramlett came around to score on a groundout by Courtney Bures. The Cyclones were able to double-up Boyce on the play as Jessica Quade threw across the field to get Boyce at third, ending the inning and minimizing the damage done.

The Cyclones showed their resiliency in the next inning, putting five runs on the board to grab the lead.

Kristen Karanzias' first hit of the season scored Katie Reichling, who reached on a single up the middle to start the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Fallon Johnson doubled to right field to plate Karanzias and Alex Johnson. The Cyclones would add two more runs when Jennifer Bigbee reached on an error, scoring Wray and Fallon Johnson, and putting the Cyclones up 5-1.

The Cyclones pushed their lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning as Kelsey Kidwell, who pinch ran after Karanzias reached on a Bulldog error, scored on a bloop single by Kristy Olsen.

The Bulldogs got one back on a fielder's interference call in the fifth inning. Iowa State was called for interference after two Mississippi State runners ended up standing on third base at the same time. The umps ruled that the Cyclones had interfered with the base runner and awarded home plate to Lindsay Hunley, cutting the Cyclone lead to 6-2 at the end of five innings.

The Bulldogs again cut into the Cyclone lead with a sixth inning run but Iowa State responded with a pair of runs in the seventh.

Wray's two-run seventh inning single scored Alex Johnson and pinch runner Holly Jordan to make up the final margin, 8-3.

Catcher Chelsea Bramlett went 2-for-4 to lead Mississippi State in the loss.

Iowa State will close out tournament play Sunday as it faces Kennesaw State at 10 a.m.
