“We had a lot of very good things happen for us this weekend,” head coach Dick Lee said. “We are just going to keep improving over the next couple weeks to prepare for (the Big 12 meet). It is still very early in the season for us and we are still in the developmental stage, but it was great weekend for the ISU Classic. We saw some great competition and many of the nation's greatest competitors.”
Lisa Koll ran away from the 3,000-meter competition, crossing the line first with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 9:33.69. In addition, Koll became the second fastest 3,000-meter runner in school history. The freshman has only competed in three races as a Cyclone track runner and has already qualified provisionally in two events (3,000-meter and 5,000-meter) and has broken the school record in the 5,000-meter run.
Competing in her first meet since May of 2005, redshirt junior Agata Kosuda made a provisional-qualifying leap of 41-10 3/4 in the triple jump. The
“I think Agata has a really good chance to do well in the conference meet,” McEachran said. “I was really glad to see that she qualified. We have two weeks before conference to work on some things, but I think her performance today will definitely help her confidence.”
Standout hurdler Rebecca Williams secured her third title of the season in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday. The senior's time of 8.40 just edged Texas A&M's Jennifer Williams. Along with the 60-meter hurdle crown, Williams upped her bid for a chance to run in the NCAA indoor championship by running 8.38 in the semi-finals.
“It feels good to win it because I have never won at this meet before,” Williams said. “It definitely makes for a long day when you run three races. I am still not totally satisfied with my time, but that is just me, I'm competitive.”
Sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts was excited about the race but thinks Williams is just beginning.
“Rebecca always rises to the level of the competition and she was able to get the win today,” Roberts said. “Now we have two weeks to sharpen up and improve her marks to help her get into the championship meet. Rebecca is undefeated at home so far, and I hope we can hold onto that in two weeks at the conference meet.”
Jenna Caffrey also had a stellar day in the 60-meter hurdles. The freshman became the third-fastest hurdler in
Sara Boisen was the top collegiate competitor in the 600-yard run on Saturday. The senior's clocking of 1:22.73 is one the top times in the Big 12 Conference. Boisen came in second overall behind Anastasiya Kapachinskaya, the 2003 world champion in the 200-meter dash.
Other athletes that broke personal records include Lashawn Wright in the 60-meter dash and Katie Paulson and Shaylyn Wiarda in the 800-meter run. Leia Jackson broke two personal best times in the 60 and 400-meter dashes and Amy Waggoner threw a career best in the shot put.
The Cyclones will look to continue success into the Big 12 conference meet on Feb. 23-24 held at the
