AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 6-1, Saturday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cyclones took eight of nine nine matches. ISU's doubles sweep affirmed Iowa State's continued stellar play in doubles action this season. With the win, the Cyclones are now 3-1.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Iowa State's Eve Soriano and Kara Hickey moved their spring duals record to 6-0 as they held on to defeat Gustavus Adolphus' tandem of Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach, 9-8 (7-2). In the No. 2 doubles slot, senior Jill Palen and junior Caitlin Loprinzi pushed their doubles record to 5-1 as they defeated Hannah Frericks and Jaime Gaard, 8-3. Chrissy Derouin and Alyssa Palen picked up a doubles win for the Cyclones as they knocked off Jenni White and Darcy Haubrick, 8-6.
In singles play, the Cyclones took five of the six matches. Jill Palen, playing No. 1 singles for the Cyclones, defeated Lauren Hom, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles slot, Hickey defeated the Gusties' Jaime Gaard, 6-0, 6-0.
"Kara played extremely well all weekend," head coach Michele Conlon said.
Iowa State's Caitlin Loprinzi picked up a singles win as she defeated Gustie Jenni White in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 4 singles slot, Iowa State's Alyssa Palen fought back after dropping the opening set, to pick up a three-set win over the Gusties' Hannah Frericks.
"Alyssa kept a lot of poise in her match after losing the first set to come back and win," Conlon said.
Iowa State will return to Big 12 Conference action Friday, as they host Texas A&M at the 7 Flags Event Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Competition will begin at 4 p.m.
