GREELEY, Colo. - The Iowa State tennis team defeated Northern Colorado, 4-3, at the Work Out West Center on Friday. The Cyclones got off to the right start, sweeping all three doubles matches from the Bears.
In doubles action, the Cyclone duo of Kara Hickey and Eve Soriano pushed their record to 7-1 this season as they defeated Northern Colorado's pair of Renee Nuccio and Karen Groll, 8-4. In the No. 2 doubles slot, ISU's Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi improved their season record to 6-2 as they went on to defeat Northern Colorado's Christian Shelly and Tabathia Knop, 8-6. In the No. 3 slot the Cyclone duo of Chrissy Derouin and Alyssa Palen defeated the Bears pair of Tiffiany Knop and Meredith Krystofik, 8-6.
In singles play, the Cyclones and the Bears split the six matches. Senior Jill Palen improved to 6-3 overall as she defeated NCU's Groll, 6-0, 6-3. In the No. 3 slot, ISU's Loprinzi was victorious as she came back after being down in the first set to defeat the Bears' Krystofik, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Loprinzi improved to 4-3 in singles play. Freshman Alyssa Palen defeated Nuccio in two close sets, taking the tie-breaker, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
The Cyclones will return to the courts tomorrow in Boulder, Colo., as they face off against Big 12 Conference foe, Colorado. The Buffaloes come into the match ranked No. 47 nationally. Colorado, will be the third nationally ranked opponent that the Cyclones have played this spring. This will be the second conference meet for the Buffs while it will be the third for the visiting Cyclones.
