AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's track and field team used a top eight finish to collect three points and tied for tenth place after the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility.
The Cyclones qualified for five finals and ran two career bests, in addition to their three points. Missouri's 28 points leads the field after the first day.
“The whole day started off really good with Neil Hines doing a really good job in the multi-events,” men's head track and field coach Steve Lynn said. “We had a lot of things that were good today, we had PR's (personal bests) all over the place, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.”
With only three events left in the heptathlon, Hines currently holds second-place with 3,055 points behind
“I'm ready to go,” Hines said. “It's been a long indoor season and I'm ready to go. It's the [Big 12] Championships, go big or go home.”
Senior Kellen Burl ran a 60-meter hurdles career best, 7.96, to qualify for the finals tomorrow at 1:40 p.m. Burl's mark surpasses his previous career best, 8.02, set last week at the UNI Dome Open.
The second personal career best of ISU's day came when Jared Lewis ran a 6.78 to qualify for the finals in the 60-meter dash. The sophomore transfer from
“It's a blessing,” Lewis said. “I'm just excited to be able to compete. I really didn't know what to expect. I'm going to let it rip [tomorrow]. I can't tell you what's going to happen.”
ISU's Brandon Rooney continues his strong sophomore campaign by qualifying for the finals in the mile run with a run of 4:08.61.The finals are scheduled Saturday at 2:20 p.m., where the California native will try to put an exclamation point on his indoor season.
Guor Majak tallied three points for the Cyclones Friday with his performance in the 5,000 meter run. He posted a time of 14:12.95 good enough for sixth place.
Events start back up Saturday with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. and conclude with the 4x400 meter relay scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
