AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team defeated the Creighton Bluejays, 7-0, sweeping all nine matches (six singles, three doubles), at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center on Friday. The meet opened up with doubles play and the Cyclones came out red hot.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Iowa State's Eve Soriano and Kara Hickey pushed their spring duals record to 5-0 as they defeated Creighton's tandem of Katie Chiu and Tess Reddin, 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles slot, senior Jill Palen and junior Caitlin Loprinzi improved their spring doubles record to 4-1 as they defeated Lindsey Erickson and Nicole Thurston, 8-2. Also picking up a doubles win for the Cyclones was the duo of Chrissy Derouin and Danielle Uscinski, winning their match by the score of 8-3.
In singes play, senior Jill Palen battled fought back after losing the first set and getting down in the second to defeat Creighton's Chiu in a tie-breaker, 2-6, 7-5, (10-8).
"I was really proud of the way Jill came back in her match," head coach Michele Conlon said. "It takes a lot of mental toughness to come back from down a set and 4-2 in the second," Conlon said.
In the No. 2 singles slot, Hickey defeated CU's Thurston in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Loprinzi, playing in the No. 3 singles slot for the Cyclones, defeated Reddin, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Alyssa Palen pushed her singles record to 4-2, as she defeated Erickson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Derouin also picked up a victory in singles play as she defeated Creighton's Jodi Yanagida, 6-1, 6-1.
"I thought Chrissy played a real solid match," Conlon said.
Iowa State will resume tennis action Saturday as they host Gustavus Adolphus. Competition will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
