Women's Track has Record Day

AMES, Iowa- Iowa State distance runners Lisa Koll and Jenny Mockler had a record setting day at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.

Koll, the freshman, competing in her first ever outdoor 5,000-meter run, recorded a career best time of 16:19.58 that made her the second-fastest 5,000-meter runner in Cyclone history. The Fort Dodge native surpassed former 1984 All-American Bonnie Sons for the record. Koll already holds the 5,000-meter indoor record and is just five seconds shy of outdoor record holder Carol Cook. Koll's effort also qualifies her for the NCAA regional meet.

“Lisa's goal coming into today's race was to qualify for the NCAA regional meet,” said women's head coach Dick Lee. “It was an outstanding effort for her first ever outdoor meet as a Cyclone and it is still early in the season. She ran a great race today and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds.”

After an impressive outing in the 800-meter run last weekend at the Disney Invite, senior Jenny Mockler returned this week with another stellar performance. Mockler ran a career best time of 4:31.59 in the 1500-meter run on Saturday.

“Jenny also ran a fantastic race today,” Lee said. “All of the heats ahead of her started the race with a slow pace but Jenny handled it very well and finished the race very strong.”

At the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo., Cyclones Amy Waggoner and Heather Gilliland competed in their individual throwing events. Waggoner earned fifth-place in the discus with a throw of 132-04 and Gilliland finished 10^th in the javelin with a throw of 117-10.

The Cyclones will be back in action next weekend with two different travel destinations. Part of the squad will fly to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays. The majority of the team will be making the bus trip to Cedar Falls for the UNI Messersmith Invite.
