“Their goal was to be here at this meet and break the school record,” head men's track and field coach Steve Lynn said. “In indoor track you just don't know what's going to happen, but our guys can run with anybody down here.”
The team consisting of sophomore Gabe Kimpson of Griswald, senior Elijah Braimah, senior Jared Graham of Neola and sophomore Jared Lewis broke the school record set in 1984, when the quartet ran 3:07.39 last week at the ISU NCAA Qualifier.
The 4x400 relay team's school-record time placed them seventh in the nation in the event. Baylor holds the number one position with a mark of 3:04.97.
Junior Tony Stanfield will take Kimpson's place as the lead leg. Kimpson was injured at practice this week and will not be unable to compete. Stanfield looks to be a strong competitor for the position after training with the squad all year long.
