Iowa State softball player Kristen Karanzias was named to the 2007 Big 12 Conference's Spring Sports Good Works Team in recognition of community service efforts by league student-athletes, the conference announced Thursday.
Karanzias, a senior from Yorba Linda, Calif., is a business and marketing major. She is a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) for ISU athletes.
Karanzias has participated in numerous community service projects including the Adopt an Angel Christmas Gift Program, Relay for Life, Race for the Cure, Read Across America and the preperation and distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets for underprivileged families.
The Relay for Life event raised over $47,000 to help the American Cancer Society save lives and empower people to fight back against the disease.
The Big 12 Spring Sports Good Works Team is made up of 12 student-athletes, one from each member institution. Each student-athlete was selected by their institution for recognition based on significant community service, good academic standing and participation in a Big 12 sponsored sport. The spring team consists of athletes from baseball, golf, softball, track and field, and tennis. This is the inaugural spring team.
