IRVING, Texas - The Iowa State tennis team was well represented as the Big 12 Conference announced the selection of 44 student-athletes to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 tennis teams Tuesday. Five of the six eligible Cyclones were named to the first team. Seniors Jill Palen and Danielle Uscinski, were joined on the first team by Caitlin Loprinzi, Chrissy Derouin, and Kara Hickey.
This marks the third time that ISU's Palen and Uscinski have been named a first-team academic selection. Palen, a Rochester, Minn., native is majoring in exercise and sport science with an emphasis in physical therapy. Uscinski, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native is majoring in business management.
Juniors Caitlin Loprinzi and Chrissy Derouin earned first-team honors for the second straight year, while Hickey received the honor for the first time. Loprinzi is majoring in biology while Derouin is majoring in psychology. Hickey, a Columbia, Mo., native holds a cumlative grade-point average of 3.97 while majoring in statistics.
The academic all-league women's tennis team consisted of 32 first-team members and 12 second-team members. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Iowa State tied Oklahoma for placing the most student-athletes (five) to the first team.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
