AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team travels to Kansas City, Mo., to face against Oklahoma State at the 11th annual Big 12 Tennis Championships. The Cyclones (5-12, 0-11) enter the tournament seeded 12th and will square-off against the fifth-seeded Cowgirls at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
The Cyclones wrapped up their regular season with a 6-1 road loss to Texas Tech last Sunday in Lubbock, Texas. The Cyclones and Cowgirls met earlier this month with the Cowgirls upending the Cyclones 6-1 in Ames. ISU sophomore Kara Hickey defeated OSU's Yawna Allen in straight sets to pick up the lone point for the Cyclones.
Freshman Alyssa Palen leads the team in singles wins this spring with 10. ISU's No. 1 doubles tandem of Eve Soriano and Hickey lead the Cyclones in doubles wins with eight.
Oklahoma State comes into the match with a record of 15-7 overall and 7-4 in league play. The 71st ranked Cowgirls closed out their regular season by dropping a 5-2 road contest to then-No. 20 Texas A&M in College Station. In the match against the Aggies, OSU's Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Lauren Simmons picked up singles wins for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls are led in singles play by Shatkovskaya, who leads the team in overall wins (21) and winning percentage (.778).
The winner of the match between the Cyclones and Cowgirls will advance to the quarterfinals to face fourth-seeded and 35th-ranked Colorado Friday at noon.
