AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior guard Heather Ezell has been selected to play this summer for the U.S. Jones Cup Team, which will be sponsored by Athletes in Action Basketball. The team is made up of selected women's college basketball players from across the country and will play in a tournament in Taipei, Taiwan, July 11-17.
“I'm excited to meet new people and to go somewhere outside of the U.S. to play and experience a new side of the game,” Ezell said. “You always hear about the international game and how different it is and I am excited to actually get to experience it. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not many people get the chance to do.”
The U.S. Jones Cup Team will be coached by Texas A&M associate head coach Vic Schaefer and is one of six participating teams that will play in a single-round robin tournament. Countries represented in the international tournament include Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and two teams from Chinese Taipei. The team will train in College Station, Texas, July 1-7, and will depart for Taiwan on July 8.
“When you get a kid from Bill Fennelly's program, you know they are going to be prepared for what we are going to face,” Schaefer said. “We are going to face some very good international teams. Korea is bringing a team with four or five national team members and Australia is always a good team. We want to take players that have been well coached and have had demands placed on them and have responded. Having competed against Heather, I know what kind of kid she is and what kind of competitor she is and we are excited to have her as part of our team. We are not going over there just for a great experience, we are going over there to win the Jones Cup and I think Heather will help us do that.”
Ezell, a Springfield, Mo., native, is entering her junior season at Iowa State. The 5-9 guard scored in double digits in 10 games last season, including leading the Cyclones with 11 points in the win over Texas A&M in the Big 12 Championship semifinals. She has averaged 8.7 points and 2.8 assists per game over her two-year career, while starting 46 contests.
Other players on the Jones Cup Team roster include Brian January (Arizona State), Kendra Reed (Southern Mississippi), Jhasmin Player (Baylor), Sarah-Jo Lawrence (George Washington), Brittany Taylor James (North Carolina A&T), Anjie Nelp (Colorado State) Rachel Allison (Baylor), Jackie McFarland (Colorado), Katie Vieth (Kentucky), Leah Rush (Oklahoma) and Latoya Micheaux (Texas A&M).
