ANKENY, Iowa - Classes start for the Iowa State students on Monday, but the Cyclone women's basketball team got its first set of tests Friday morning at Camp Dodge in Ankeny, Iowa. As a part of the NCAA Life Skills Program, the ISU squad underwent a series of teambuilding tests on the Leadership Reaction Course.
LTC Lawrence Braue, the department chair of Military Science and director of the Army ROTC at
“The big things are to introduce them to leadership and give certain squad members an opportunity to lead a group,” Braue said. “The real purpose is team cohesion - teaching them to work as a unit. It tests all facets of leadership: conceptual skills, to be able to put together a plan, their physical strength and their emotional strength. It is all the dimensions that compose leadership that are being tested here. Plus it is fun.”
The team had multiple tasks where they had to go from one side of a pit of water to the other with minimal supplies in which to complete the tasks. The Cyclones were given a time limit to complete and if a rule was broken in the process, they suffered a 10-second time penalty and/or had to begin the task over again.
“It gives them a chance just to have fun in a leadership role,” Braue said. “I think the team cohesion that comes out of it is just tremendous. The big advantage that they have is their physical strength. These (tasks) take a lot of upper body strength and these girls are really strong, which has really helped them a lot. They work together as a team really well. I think this is a good way for them to start off the year. They can work together for the first time in something a little bit out of the basketball realm, so they really get to know each other.”
The student-athletes have spent portions of their summer on campus taking classes and working in the weight room. Now, just before classes get underway, they had a chance to spend time with new teammates and reacquaint with fellow veternas in a different environment that will help the team when the season begins.
“I thought today was really important, because it was a great way to start off the year on a teamwork note,” junior Amanda Nisleit said. “We learned today that everyone is a leader in certain situations. The (ROTC) leaders were impressed with how encouraging we were with each other. All together leadership and encouragement are the things we will take with us into the season.”
The ISU women's basketball team will participate in the Cyclone Fan Fest along with other Cyclone teams on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the Bergstrom Indoor Facility.
