BOULDER, Colo. ? The Iowa State women's basketball team was down 12 in the second half, but came back to earn a double-overtime win Sunday afternoon, defeating 23rd-ranked Colorado, 84-77, at Coors Event Center.
With the win, Iowa State improved to 12-3 on the season and evened its Big 12 record at 1-1. The Cyclones snapped an 11-game winning streak by Colorado and dropped the Buffaloes to 12-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
Alison Lacey led the Cyclones with 27 points, including knocking down seven treys, and freshman Kelsey Bolte finished with 21 for ISU. Nicky Wieben claimed her first double-double of the season for ISU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie McFarland led Colorado with 28 points.
The Cyclones escaped the first half with a 32-30 lead on a last second lay-in by Wieben. Iowa State shot 48 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, and hit five of its eight three-point attempts, including a 3-for-3 effort by Lacey.
ISU got out to an 8-4 lead early on a Lacey three and expanded the lead, 12-6, on a basket by Wieben. But Colorado went on a 16-5 run to take a 22-17 lead with 6:39 to play in the period.
CU took a 30-27 advantage on free throws by McFarland, before Heather Ezell knocked down a trey to tie the score. Colorado was called for an offensive foul on the next possession, and with seven seconds to play the Cyclones drew up a play that got Wieben an open look under the basket at the buzzer to send ISU to the locker room with the two-point lead.
CU's Brittany Spears came out of the locker room on fire for the Buffaloes, scoring eight points in a 12-4 CU run to open the second half, taking a 48-36 lead. But the Cyclone defense made several stops while the ISU offense went on a 10-2 run to get within four, 50-46. After CU hit a pair of free throws, the Cyclones scored 10 unanswered points to go ahead 56-54 with 3:40 to play. Ezell hit a trey for a 59-56 ISU advantage and Spears immediately answered with a three of her own. The two teams traded baskets at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime tied 61-61.
The Cyclones opened the first overtime with a three by Lacey, and ISU took a 69-65 lead on her free throws with 55 seconds remaining, but Colorado got back-to-back field goals to tie the game at 69, sending the game to double overtime.
Colorado immediately took a 74-69 advantage in the second OT period, but Lacey again answered as she sparked a 13-3 run by the Cyclones to finish the game. The game was tied at 77-all, but Lacey hit a key three to give ISU its final lead.
Iowa State shot 40.6 percent from the field, 51.9 percent from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe. The Cyclones outrebounded CU, 43-35.
The Cyclones remain on the road, traveling to 15th-ranked Texas on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest in Austin, Texas.
