COLUMBIA, Mo. ? The No. 23 Iowa State gymnastics team opened its 2008 road schedule with a 194.125-192.400 loss to No. 12 Missouri.
“Coming out of the first event with a deficit, it was an uphill battle from there,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “I'm happy with how the girls performed under pressure. We have plenty of things to clear up as the season progresses. Everything is going according to plan so far, we just have to build on this as we go through the season.”
Sophomore Katie Sweetin tied her career best in the vault (9.825) and set a new personal mark on the floor exercise (9.775) to lead the Cyclones in both events. Jacquelyn Holmes finished second to Sweetin on the vault with her own personal best of 9.700 while Jasmine Thompson placed second on the bars with a season-high 9.800.
“I'm extremely proud of Katie Sweetin. She showed us what we can look for in her performances the rest of the season,” Ronayne said. “Jacquelyn came back for the second meet of her career and she is starting to get her nerves and power under control.”
Missouri opened up the first rotation by taking a lead after a 49.050 on vault, while Iowa State earned a score of 47.550 on bars. Thompson led the Cyclones her 9.800. Nikki Dilbert scored a 9.625 while Holmes added a 9.600. Sarah Shire paced Missouri with a 9.900 on vault, one of three Tigers to score 9.850 or better.
Iowa State chipped into the Missouri lead in rotation two, getting a score of 48.575 on vault while the Tigers managed a 47.700 on bars, giving Missouri a 96.750-96.125 lead at the meet's midway point. Sweetin placed fourth on vault by tying her career-best of 9.825. Dilbert finished second for the Cyclones with a 9.800 and Holmes continued her strong showing with a career-best 9.700. For Missouri, Alicia Hatcher led on bars with a 9.825.
A strong performance on beam helped Missouri increase its lead to 145.250-144.300 after the third rotation. Sweetin paced Iowa State on the floor with a career-high 9.775 while Dilbert added a 9.750 as the Cyclones tallied a score of 48.500 on floor. Missouri put together a 48.500 on beam, led by Hatcher with a 9.825.
Even though the Cyclones held the sixth-best beam average in the nation going into the meet, they weren't able to rally for a win in the last rotation. The Cyclones scored a 48.125 on the beam, led by Ceilia Maccani with a career best 9.750. Missouri didn't hurt themselves on the floor in the final rotation, locking up the win.
Missouri's Adrianne Perry won the all-around competition with a 39.225. Dilbert finished second with a 38.725 and Thompson placed fifth by posting a score of 38.100.
