On this week's edition of CYber CYd for the gymnastics team, junior Megan Barnes checks in. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native writes about a celebration the team puts on for its members from Canada, progressing to routines and much more. Check back next Thursday when sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes provides the next CYber CYd.
Hey Cyclone fans! I'm back to give you an update on how things are going for us. A lot has changed since I wrote to you last. The past couple weeks have been very exciting for us in the gym. We started to move from just skills to putting together half routines, and we made a big step this week and started doing routines. It's a very exciting time for all of us to see our hard work coming together in a routine. The first sign of routines gets me really excited for the season.
On bars, we have been doing a routine with just a layout fly away dismount; this helps get our endurance up to add the final piece of our routines. In previous years, the first day of bar routines had been tough for me because it really tests your endurance, but I was pleasantly surprised this year when I finished my routine and didn't feel too tired. This is a testament to how hard we have worked this preseason. On beam, we put together routines on Monday. I was really proud of how well everyone did. Even though the routines weren't perfect, everybody worked on focusing on one skill at a time, and I think we are at a great starting point.
On floor, we have really been working on our endurance. Janet (Anson), our volunteer coach, always comes up with creative, killer endurance sets for us to do. She is really good at mixing things up and we are already seeing how much easier routines are because of that endurance. Floor has been really fun because everyone is getting their new routines. I think all of you will really love the routines this year, especially Anna Robey's, as it is one of the best routines I have ever seen. Our freshmen are starting to get the idea of what a college routine looks like, and we are working on bringing out their personalities as they perform. Vault is looking good as well. More and more people are doing their vaults on to higher levels of mats, and I think we are going to be able to put together a really good vault lineup this year.
Outside of the gym, we are doing something really fun this week. Since we have four Canadians on our team (Melanie Tham, Jody McKellar, Alex Grant and Ashley Kent) we are celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving. Our four Canada girls miss their Thanksgiving with their families, so we thought it would be fun to have our own here. Ashley Kent is making the turkey (it's her first time) but I know she will do great, and the rest of us were assigned different side dishes. Getting together for big meals is one of our favorite things to do as a team, although I don't think our apartment neighbors appreciate the noise level when we are all together!
Well, I hope all of you are getting as excited for the season as we are! Bye for now! GO CYCLONES!
Megan
