AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team is ranked 24th in the first regular-season ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll. The Cyclones are also receiving enough votes in the Associated Press Top 25 to rank just outside of the top 25, sitting in 27th place.
ISU opened the season with a 77-45 win over UMKC last Sunday. The Cyclones return 100 percent of their scoring and rebounding from a team that went 21-13 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Championship last season. Iowa State was picked third in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Cyclones received votes in both polls in the preseason, but moved into the actual top 25 this week. Iowa State was also chosen 22nd in ESPN.com's preseason poll.
A contributor to ESPN's preseason poll, Mechelle Voepel, said about ISU, “The Cyclones made the NCAA tournament last season against all odds after losing two starters to ACL injuries. Nicky Wieben and Toccara Ross are back, and it's the deepest team Bill Fennelly has had in a while. The Cyclones should be the top squad in the Big 12 North.”
