In anticipation of Friday's dual at Wisconsin, our first featured match pits the Cyclones against the Badgers. The year was 1993, Bobby Douglas' first at the helm of the Iowa State wrestling program. The Cyclones' Eric Akin entered the dual against Wisconsin ranked fourth nationally at 118 pounds. His opponent, Matt Hanutke, had just become eligible at the semester break - but was no pushover. This bout was the opener of Iowa State's 29-13 victory. As a postscript, these two wrestlers met on the mat again at Hilton Coliseum in 1993 - this time at the NCAA Championships, where Akin garnered a 4-3 decision in the quarterfinals en route to a fourth-place finish.
Stay tuned to cyclones.com and Clone Zone for additional featured matches throughout the 2008-09 season.
