AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior Amanda Nisleit has been selected as one of 30 national candidates for the 2008-09 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award is given to an NCAA Division I student-athlete in nine sports each year.
Based on criteria focusing on the “Four C's” of classroom, character, community and competition, the final award winner will be selected by national balloting of head basketball coaches, national media and college basketball fans.
CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. Nisleit is one of five Big 12 female candidates for the honor this season. The Woodbury, Minn., native holds a 3.85 cumulative grade-point average in elementary education. She is on schedule to finish her coursework this spring and will do her student teaching next fall for a Dec. 2009 graduation date.
“Amanda is a shining example of what is good about college athletics,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “She is a true student-athlete and a great role model for those who follow our program. This is a great honor for Amanda and her family and certainly well deserved.”
Nisleit was an Academic All-Big 12 First Team pick as a sophomore and junior (freshmen are not eligible) and has been a member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Dean's List every semester of her career. On the court, she is averaging seven points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season. Against Drake, Nisleit went 6-for-6 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, for a career-high 18 points.
Nisleit has taken the initiative to get involved in several community service projects throughout her stay at Iowa State. She has spoken to students at local elementary schools about respect, and has made several trips to read to classrooms in the Ames and Des Moines community. She has spoken to members of the Kiwanis' AKTION Club and participated in Dance Marathon Date Night, among many other activities.
From each of the list of 30 nominees, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in February. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. In addition to voting by Division I head basketball coaches and national media, college basketball fans will also be able to submit ballots by voting online at seniorclassaward.com. Lowe's, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, will present the winners with trophies during the weekends of the respective NCAA Men's and Women's Final Four.
