AMES, Iowa - Iowa State looks to continue its hot play this weekend as it heads South to take part in the Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La. The Cyclones opened the season last weekend, going 3-1 at the Miken Dome Tournament.

Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State returns to action this weekend as it heads to the Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La. The Cyclones will play games against the host Warhawks, Central Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Louisiana Tech and Southeast Missouri State.
- Iowa State went 3-1 last weekend at the Miken Dome Tournament, picking up two wins over UW-Green Bay and one over North Dakota State before falling to the Bison in the final game of the tournament.
- The 3-1 start is Iowa State's best since 1981 when the Cyclones opened the season 4-0. That year, ISU finished 28-7 overall.
- The Cyclones will play five games this weekend bringing their total games to nine. The best nine game start in school history was 8-1 in 1979.
- Iowa State allowed just five runs last weekend. It is the least runs allowed by the pitching staff in the first four games of a season since 1986 (three runs).
- Four Cyclones hit at least .400 for the weekend. Michelle Dettmer was 2-for-3 (.667) while Jacquelyn Beatty hit .429 (3-for-7) and Ariel Coburn and Kelsey Kidwell each hit .417 at 5-for-12 each.
- A pair of Cyclones made an immediate impact in their first ever appearance wearing Cardinal and Gold. Freshman Rachel Zabriskie (Austin, Texas) tossed a no-hitter against UW-Green Bay in her first career while junior transfer Jacquelyn Beatty (Austin, Texas) blasted a two-run homer in her first career at-bat.
- Kelsey Kidwell (Solon, Iowa) had more hits last weekend (five) than during her entire freshman campaign.
- Iowa State had two triples on opening weekend, one each by Kidwell and Carrie Monroe, after recording just five in 2007.
- ISU is the Big 12's top fielding team after last weekend, posting a .991 fielding percentage. The Cyclones also turned three double plays.
- Amie Ford made a successful return from elbow surgery which forced her to miss the entire fall season. The senior combined for a shutout against UW-Green Bay, throwing 4.2 innings of one-hit ball. Ford had six strikeouts in the game.
- Iowa State is the youngest team in the Big 12 with 12-of-its-16 players being freshmen or sophomores. Missouri is the second youngest with 14-of-20 players with under two years of collegiate experience.
- The Cyclones will be on the road for the first 34 games of the 60-game schedule.
- The Cyclones were picked last in the Big 12 preseason poll. Texas A&M was selected first and Oklahoma second.

Iowa State had just one error in four games last weekend. Last season the Cyclones had 12 errors in the first four games of the season.
Scouting Central Arkansas (0-5)
- Central Arkansas enters the weekend 0-5 after taking part in the UCF Tournament last weekend. The Bears dropped a pair of contests to North Carolina State as well as games against Kansas, Illinois State and Central Florida.
- The Bears are led by third baseman Keatha Tollett, who hit .417 in 12 at bats on opening weekend. In the circle, three players got starts last weekend led by senior Lyndsey Harris who had a 3.00 ERA despite going 0-3. UCA hits .152 as a team and has a 5.25 ERA.
- Central Arkansas was tabbed last in the Southland Conference. UCA went 16-42 a year ago and 6-24 in league play.
- The Cyclones and Bears have never met prior to this weekend.
- Natalie Shock returned to Central Arkansas this year as the interim head coach after a two-year hiatus. Shock, the school's SWA and Assistant Compliance Director, has a 209-256 record at the school.
Scouting Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-2)
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff is 0-2 on the season after dropping a pair of games to Arkansas Tech last weekend.
- The Lady Lions struggled against the Golden Suns, going just 2-for-38 from the plate in the doubleheader. Ashleigh Smith and Jacquline Herbert collected the only hits, with Smith's being a double.
- Maria Muzquiz is the only pitcher on the staff. Muzquiz enters this weekend with a 10.64 ERA.
- This will be the first meeting between the Cyclones and Golden Suns.
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff is coached by Jalana Brown.
Scouting Louisiana Monroe (2-3)
- The Warhawks are 2-3 after earning a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State on Tuesday afternoon. ULM went 0-3 on opening weekend, dropping two games to Louisiana Tech and one to Louisiana-Lafayette.
- Louisiana Monroe hits .238 as a team and is led by Molly McNeil and Brianna Love, who hit .444 and .429, respectively. Love hit a home run and drove in three against NSU. The Warhawks are 6-for-10 on stolen base attempts.
- Lindsay Rittenhouse (1-2, 2.65 ERA) and Kandace Causey (1-1, 3.60) get the majority of the time in the circle for ULM. Rittenhouse has struck out a team-high 25 while limiting opponents to a .129 batting average.
- ULM is coached by Rosemary Holloway-Hill.
- This will be the first meeting between the Cyclones and Warhawks.
Scouting Louisiana Tech (3-3)
- Louisiana Tech split a doubleheader Wednesday with North Texas. The Lady Techsters were one-hit in the first game, falling 1-0, before bouncing back to grab an 8-6 win in the second contest.
- The Lady Techsters hit just .188 as a team and their pitching staff has posted a 4.49 ERA.
- Catcher Regan Clark leads the team with a .313 average while Amberly Waits is the top run producer with five runs batted in.
- Krissi Oliver sees the most action for the Lady Techsters in the circle. The junior is 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings. She has struck out 16 while walking just three.
- Tech is coached by Sarah Dawson, who is in her sixth season as head coach and has compiled a 104-196 record.
- Louisiana Tech holds a 5-1 edge in the all-time series. The last meeting came in 1994 with the Lady Techsters winning 5-0.
Scouting Southeast Missouri State (0-0)
- Southeast Missouri State will be opening its season this weekend.
- The Redhawks went 20-29 a year ago and return their top-two hitters from a year ago in Michelle Summers (.333) and Stacia Dopudja (.327). The duo combined for 26 homers and 74 RBI in 2007.
- SEMO was picked to finish sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference after finishing eighth in 2007.
- The Redhawks hold a 3-2 edge in the all-time series with the Cyclones. The teams last met in 2004 with SEMO taking the 8-4 win.
- Southeast Missouri State is coached by Lana Richmond, who is in her 26th season as head coach of the Redhawks. Her career record is 732-508-2, which ranks among the winningest active coaches in NCAA history. ISU ranks third in the league in team batting (.314) and team pitching (1.35).
Austin Connection
- Iowa State added three players from Austin, Texas this season to bring its total number of Texans to five. Freshmen Rachel Zabriskie and Carrie Monroe and junior college transfer Jacquelyn Beatty all hail from Texas. Senior Amie Ford (Katy, Texas) and freshman Sara Stinson (Mesquite, Texas) round out the Cyclones that hail from the Lone Star State.
New Practice Home
- For the first time since it was constructed in 2004, the softball team has been practicing at the $9.6 million, 92,000-square-foot Bergstrom Indoor Facility. ISU has split time between the indoor facility (M-W-F, weekends) and the Lied Recreational Center (T-TH).
