COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Danielle Gant scored 22 points, including 16 in the first half, to pace the 21st-ranked Texas A&M Aggies to a 60-46 win over Iowa State at Reed Arena Wednesday night. After a rough start in the first half, the Cyclones cut the Aggie lead to nine in the second, but couldn't ever get any closer.
With the loss, Iowa State fell to 16-9 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12. Texas A&M improved to 19-7 and 7-5 in the league. Iowa State will return home to play host to No. 9 Baylor at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The time printed on the tickets is incorrect. The game was changed early in the season due to television. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.
Heather Ezell led the Cyclones with 14 points, while Alison Lacey finished with 11. Gant was the only Aggie to finish in double figures, although four players finished with eight points. Lacey led the Cyclones on the glass with seven rebounds and passed out five assists. Texas A&M outrebounded the ISU, 33-28. The Aggies shot 42.4 percent for the contest and 25 percent from three-point range. Iowa State shot 39 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from long range.
Iowa State trailed 34-19 at the intermission. Texas A&M was led by Gant's 16 points at the break. The Aggies took twice as many shots as the Cyclones over the opening 20 minutes. A&M was 16-fo-32 from the field, while ISU was 6-for-16. The Aggies also outrebounded the Cyclones, 19-8, in the first half.
Iowa State cut the A&M lead to one, 8-7, on a basket by Ezell with 15:05 to play in the first period. Amanda Nisleit again cut it to one, 10-9, but that was the last of Iowa State's scoring for the next 11 minutes. The Aggies went on a 20-0 run, getting scoring from five different players including eight from Gant. The Cyclones finally found some scoring, sparking a 10-2 run over the final three minutes to cut the lead to 32-19. The Aggies got the final score of the half for the 15-point margin.
Texas A&M extended its lead to 17 points, 38-21, to open the second half, but Iowa State got back-to-back three-pointers from Ezell and Kelsey Bolte to cut the lead to 11, 38-27. The Cyclones cut the deficit to nine, 40-31, on baskets by Ezell and Lacey with just under 14 minutes to play. After the Aggies went back up by 12, Ezell scored again to make it 46-36.
From there, Texas A&M went on an 8-2 run to open up a 16-point margin, 54-38, and eventually opened it to 20, 60-40, before the Cyclones got back-to-back threes by Anna Florzak and Shellie Mosman to finish the game.
