AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's upset bid came up short as the Cyclones allowed the ninth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears to go on a 9-2 run at end of the game to defeat ISU, 59-54, Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State led, 50-44, with just over six minutes left in the game, but three different Baylor players scored in a 6-0 run by the Lady Bears to tie the game at 50-all with 3:44 to go. Jocelyn Anderson hit a pair of free throws to give the Cyclones a 52-50 lead. After Rachel Allison tied the score again for BU, ISU's Alison Lacey hit a jumper to give Iowa State its final lead of the game 54-52.
After a Baylor miss, both teams fumbled for the rebound and Baylor freshman Melissa Jones picked up the ball outside of the arc and promptly knocked down a three-pointer to put the Bears up, 55-54, with just over two minutes remaining. The Lady Bears finished out the game with field goals by Allison and Angela Tisdale.
Three Cyclones finished in double figures, led by Jocelyn Anderson's 14 points. She also had 11 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass, to record her first career double-double. She blocked seven shots and went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe. Lacey finished with 13 points. Amanda Nisleit had 12 points, going 4-for-5 from three-point range in the first half, but went out with 18 minutes left in the game due to an ankle injury and never returned.
“We've been in so many close games that it feels like every game is a game that we could have had or should have had, but we just can't seem to find a way to finish,” Lacey said.
Iowa State shot 34.5 percent from the field after hitting just 27.6 percent in the second half. The Cyclones were held to just one trey in the second period, after nailing seven in the first. Baylor shot 41 percent for the game and 50 percent (6-12) from long range. The Lady Bears outrebounded ISU, 41-32. Jessica Morrow led BU with 18 points, while Allison registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards for Baylor.
Iowa State led the Lady Bears, 31-27, at the intermission behind seven three-pointers, including a career-high four from Nisleit. Both team shot the ball well in the opening period, as ISU hit 42.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc, and Baylor shot 39.3 percent from the floor and was 2-of-3 from deep.
The two teams traded field goals the entire first half with the largest lead by either team being four points. The score was tied five times and the lead changed hands nine times in the first 20 minutes. Baylor got back-to-back buckets from Danielle Wilson to give the Lady Bears an 18-14 edge, before Heather Ezell knocked down a trey and Anderson hit a floater for a 19-18 ISU advantage. Baylor took a one-point lead, 27-26, on a basket by Tisdale, before Anderson hit a pair of free throws and Nisleit hit her fourth trey of the half for the 31-27 halftime margin.
Iowa State will travel to Missouri Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. game at Mizzou Arena, before returning to Hilton Coliseum for the final home game of the season next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Kansas.
