COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Iowa State held on at the end, knocking down huge shots to earn a 58-54 win over Missouri Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. Alison Lacey drilled a three with two minutes to go to separate the Cyclones, 55-52, and Jocelyn Anderson drained a set of free throws with 4.7 seconds left to give Iowa State the final cushion it needed.
“We've had a lot of games where we've had chances to hit big shots and tonight we hit a few,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “We had a lot of people who hit really big shots at the end.”
Four Cyclones finished in double figures. Heather Ezell, Kelsey Bolte and Anderson each had 12, while Lacey added 10. Anderson notched the second double-double of her career with 10 rebounds. Missouri's Alyssa Hollins finished with 17 points, while Jessra Johnson had 15.
Neither team shot the ball well, as Iowa State hit 37 percent from the field and Missouri shot 32.1 percent for the contest. The Cyclones outrebounded Mizzou, 48-28, with five ISU players grabbing six or more boards.
Iowa State improved to 17-10 on the season and 6-8 in the Big 12, while Mizzou dropped to 9-18 overall and 2-12 in the league. ISU will play its final regular-season home contest Saturday when the Cyclones face Kansas at 1 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
The first half was close the whole way with four ties and four lead changes over the first 20 minutes. MU opened up a 9-5 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Hollins. The Cyclones tied the game at 9-all, before the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to open the lead back to five, 14-5.
Iowa State got a trey by Ezell and a putback by Genesis Lightbourne to tie the game again. The Cyclones took their first lead of the game, 19-16, on a conventional three-point play be Bolte. After the Tigers tied the game again at 19, Bolte got back-to-back baskets for a 23-19 lead. The Tigers got the final two scores of the half, including a three-pointer by Hollins with just a few seconds remaining on the clock to give MU a 24-23 advantage at the break.
After Mizzou scored to open the second half, Iowa State went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-26 lead. The Tigers got a basket and a pair of free throws from Johnson to tie it back up at 30-all.
Ezell knocked down a three-pointer with 8:40 to play that capped a 9-3 run by the Cyclones for a 47-40 lead. The Tigers answered with a 9-0 run that gave the Tigers the lead back, 49-47.
Lacey hit a key trey for the Cyclones to regain the lead, 55-52, with two minutes to go. Hollins knocked down two free throws with 19.7 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 55-54. The Tigers fouled Amanda Nisleit, who went to the line and hit one of two shots for a 56-54 margin with 15 seconds left. With 4.7 seconds remaining Anderson stepped up to the line and knocked down the free throws that sealed the win for the Cyclones.
