AMES, Iowa ?Alison Lacey scored 32 points and Jocelyn Anderson poured in a career-high 14 as the Iowa State women's basketball team turned back Texas Tech, 66-58, Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The score was tied at 21 at the half, but the Cyclones shot 54.5 percent and scored 45 points in the second half to earn the win. Iowa State outrebounded the Lady Raiders, 41-31, and hit 20 free throws to Texas Tech's five. Iowa State improved to 14-7 on the season and 3-5 in the Big 12, while Tech dropped to 14-8 and 2-6 in the league.
Lacey finished the night going 11-of-23 from the field and 5-of-11 from three-point range. It was the fifth time this season she has hit five or more treys in a game. Anderson had the biggest game of her career, going 6-of-9 from the floor for 14 points, to go with her nine rebounds and six blocked shots. She now holds the ISU junior class record for blocked shots with 47 this season.
“Jocelyn is trying to do everything she can to help this team and I thought she played great tonight,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said.
The Cyclones hit five of their first six shots in the second half and Anderson had seven of ISU's first 10 points to earn a 10-point lead, 33-23, with 15 minutes to play. Iowa State was up by 11 on a couple of occasions, but the Lady Raiders made a run to cut the lead to three, 50-47, with just over four minutes to play.
Kelsey Bolte hit a trey to reignite the Cyclone offense and then Lacey scored the next nine points for ISU, beginning with a three-pointer to make it 56-49 with 3:12 to go, and ending with a pair of free throws with 44 second on the clock to give the Cyclones an eight-point margin, 62-54. The Lady Raiders cut it to six, 64-58, with 11 second left, but Heather Ezell hit her last two free throws to seal the win.
The teams were tied at 21-all going into the locker room at intermission. The Cyclones shot 29.6 percent in the first half, but outrebounded the Lady Raiders, 22-13. Lacey and Anderson had all but two of ISU's first half points. Lacey had 12 at the break, while Anderson had seven.
Texas Tech got out to an early 11-7 lead, but Lacey got back-to-back field goals for a 12-11 Cyclone lead. Tech hit a trey to go up 17-14, but Anderson got three points on a field goal and a free throw to tie the game again. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half, resulting in the tie at the break.
The Cyclones will face Missouri at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as Iowa State participates in the nationwide “Think Pink” initiative to raise breast cancer awareness. The Cyclone coaches will wear pink attire, while the student-athletes will wear pink shoe laces and accessories.
