AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's tennis team is set to take on the 52nd-rated Minnesota Golden Gophers at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. It is “Free T-Shirt Day” at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The first 40 people to get in the door will get a free Iowa State tennis shirt.
The Golden Gophers enter Saturday's match with a record of 4-1, coming off a 5-2 win in Raleigh, N.C. vs. the 37th-ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack. Alessandra Ferrazi pulled off the upset of the 79th-ranked singles player Daria Petrovic, 6-4, 6-3. The Gopher's Karina Chiarelli was also triumphant in her endeavors, defeating the 97th-rated singles player Berkeley Brock, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
This is the first time the two schools have met for a dual match since 2002. The Golden Gophers won that match, 6-1. Prior to that, the Cyclones and Golden Gophers met 22 times.
The two teams did play some matches in the Gopher Invite last September. Chrissy Derouin and Reka Kelemen were victorious against the Gopher's Mariana Spilca and Danielle Mousseau, 8-6. Iowa State freshman Reka Kelemen won two singles matches over Minnesota, defeating Jackie Claypool, 6-2, 6-1, and Liz Tusler, 6-3, 6-4. Alessandra Ferrazi and Erin Karonis played a close match, but Ferrazi ultimately defeated Karonis, 6-2, 6-3. Karonis was successful in her match against Danielle Mousseau, winning 6-3, 6-2.
