AMES, Iowa ? Shellie Mosman, a sophomore on the Iowa State women's basketball team, has been named to the 2007-08 Big 12 Conference Winter Sports Good Works Team. Student-athletes were selected for recognition based on community service, academic standing and participation in a Big 12-sponsored sport.
“It's always really nice to get an honor like this,” Mosman said. “Honors like that to me are sometimes more important than an athletic honor because they can carry-on in real life after college. I'm really thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this.”
Mosman's community service is extensive both individually and with the women's basketball team. Her service includes visiting nursing homes and reading to elementary students at Wright Elementary School in Des Moines, Iowa. Last year Mosman also captained a team and raised $1,000 for a multiple sclerosis walk in Des Moines. Mosman plans to captain the team again, but with a $2,000 goal.
In addition to her volunteer work, Mosman maintains a spotless 4.0 grade-point average.
“I always just try to do my best in school,” Mosman said. “Having a 4.0 is great, but it's not something I have to do. I just try my best and if it works, it works. I feel like my GPA is one of my biggest contributions to the team.”
The winter Good Works Team consists of members from fall and winter sports (cross country, football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming & diving and wresting). The Big 12 will release another team for spring sports (baseball, golf, softball, tennis, track & field).
