LINCOLN, Neb. ? Iowa State saved its best rotation for last Friday against Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. It wasn't quite enough as ISU fell to the No. 15 Huskers 196.175-194.150.
The Cyclones scored 49.950 on beam, their highest total of the season on that event. Bolstered by three scores of 9.800 or higher, the Cyclones beat their previous best score on beam by .075.
“I'm really happy with our effort on beam,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “It was the last event and we knew we were down, but we focused on our performance instead of the scores. We've been working on keeping our focus and we were able to do that. (Assistant) Coach (TeShawne) Jackson has done a terrific job with them and all the work is starting to show.”
The Cyclones started with a 48.025 on bars while Nebraska put up a score of 49.000 on vault. The Cyclones were led by Ceilia Maccani who put up a 9.750. It was the third consecutive meet that Maccani has scored 9.700 or better on bars. Jody McKellar added a 9.725, putting together back-to-back strong showings on bars after a 9.800 at Iowa last week. Nebraska was led by Emily Parsons' 9.950.
The second rotation was much stronger for the Cyclones as they scored a 48.525 on vault. Nebraska continued its strong performance with a 49.075 on bars to take a 98.075-96.550 lead at the midway point. Nikki Dilbert put up a 9.800, tying her third-best score of the season. Megan Barnes added a 9.750 for ISU and Jasmine Thompson came away with a score of 9.700.
Dilbert led Iowa State in the third rotation as the Cyclones put up a team score of 48.650 on floor. Dilbert put together a 9.825, the first score of 9.8 or better for the Cyclones. Katie Sweetin and Thompson added matching scores of 9.750 while Anna Robey added a 9.700. For its third straight rotation, Nebraska put up a score of 49.000 or higher, increasing its lead to 147.175-145.200.
Iowa State finished the meet with a very strong performance on beam. The Cyclones tallied a team score of 48.950. Their score on beam was just .025 below the best showing the Cyclones have had on any event this season, as they put together a 48.975 on floor against Iowa on Feb. 22. Thompson led ISU with a 9.825 while Ashley Kent and Robey scored 9.800s. Robey's score was a career-best on the beam.
Nebraska's Parsons won the all-around competition with a combined score of 39.525. Dilbert placed fourth (38.575) and Thompson finished fifth (38.450).
The Cyclones will be back in action on March 21 when they travel to face Georgia.
