DES MOINES, Iowa- Iowa State head women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly will never get tired of this. Despite making his 12th appearance as a head coach in a NCAA Tournament, Fennelly still feels the excitement when he first glances at the blue carpet and the NCAA logos adorning the basketball court.
“It's a great honor for Iowa State to be here,” Fennelly said. “I try to teach all of our players what an incredible experience it is to play in the NCAA Tournament. To me, this is the greatest sporting event.”
The Cyclones won't have to travel far to participate in their ninth NCAA Tournament in school history. ISU will battle Georgia Tech tomorrow at 11 a.m., at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The close proximity will no doubt attract a loyal legion of Cyclone fans.
“I think there is no question that our fans will come out and support us,” Fennelly added. “It's a different venue and court, but certainly the fan base will be very supportive and excited about this event.”
ISU's primary assignment tomorrow will be to counter Georgia Tech's smothering pressing style. The Yellow Jackets, the 10th-seed with a 22-9 mark, lead the nation in steals, racking up an astounding 14.3 steal per game average.
“It's hard to get your players to understand the pace of the game,” Fennelly said. “They're committed to the press and not afraid to make a defensive mistake. They make plays in the open court, they trap well and go after the ball very hard. We will have to pass-fake and be strong with the ball to allow us to attack their pressure.”
