AMES, Iowa ? Rachel Zabriskie tossed six shutout innings to lead Iowa State to a 3-1 win over Western Illinois in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. With the win, Zabriskie set the ISU freshman record with her 11th victory of the season.
Zabriskie (11-3) gave up just four hits while striking out six to plant her name in the record books.
Zabriskie, who beat 15th-ranked Baylor last Saturday, got a lift from Sydni Jones, who belted her team-leading sixth homer of the season with a leadoff shot in the second.
The Cyclones (22-11) would tack on two more in the fifth. Carleigh Berry and Kristy Olsen walked to open the inning and were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Kidwell. After Courtney Wray walked to load the bases, Alex Johnson came through with a single to plate Berry. Jacquelyn Beatty then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Olsen to make it 3-0.
After a hitless sixth inning by Zabriskie, ISU went to Charissa Carlin to wrap up the win. Carlin allowed a run but prevented further damage to pick up her second save of the afternoon.
Lori Pankratz (0-3) gave up three runs on six hits to take the loss for Western Illinois (3-16).
Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 to lead ISU at the plate.
The Cyclones will return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Northern Iowa. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
