AMES, Iowa- Corey Ihmels and the rest of the Cyclone track and field coaching staff recently rounded out the first recruiting class of their tenure, adding 17 new members for the 2008-09 season. The class includes eight home-grown Iowans, several athletes from around the country and a sprinter from Canada.
Men
Clint Martin- Boone High School, Boone, Iowa
Martin placed third in the 200-meters at the 2007 Iowa 4A State Championships with time of 22.74. At the same meet, Martin earned fifth in the 100-meter dash, running an 11.44. Holds career bests of 10.84 in the 100-meters, 22.00 in the 200-meters and 49.90 in the 400-meters.
“Clint is the ideal student athlete and is the finishing piece to a recruiting class that will be the backbone of our sprint relays for the next 4 years," Ihmels said.
Bryce Colston- Xavier High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Colston captured the Iowa 3A state title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.58 in 2007. He also finished runner-up in the 100-meters at the Iowa 3A State Championships, with a clocking of 11.55. Colston's 18 points helped Xavier High School win the Iowa 3A state championship in track and field. He ran personal bests of 10.60 in the 100-meters and 21.95 in the 200-meters.
“As one of the top short sprinters in Iowa, he will likely be a key addition to our 4x100-meter relay squad,” Ihmels said.
Devin Allbaugh- Pleasant Valley High School, Pleasant Valley, Iowa
In cross country, Allbaugh was named 2007 Iowa High School Gatorade's Runner of the Year, and was the 4A state champion, running 15:39. He helped guide his team to the 2006 and 2007 Iowa 4A Team Cross Country Championship. Allbaugh was the 3,200-meter Iowa State champion in 2006 and 2007 in track and field. He received all-state and all-Elite honors in track and field in 2006. Allbaugh holds the school-record in the 3,200-meter run, 3-mile run and the 4x800-meter relay.
“Every year our goal is to get the best cross country runner in the state of Iowa,” said Ihmels. “With Devin Allbaugh we have accomplished our goal. We are excited to see what he can do as a Cyclone.”
Zachary Richards- Monroe High School, Monroe, Wash.
Richards achieved a prep best of 221-03.00 in the hammer throw. He finished fifth in the nation out of 300 hammer throwers, and currently is the number one high school senior hammer thrower in the nation.
“I think Zach Richards is the best hammer thrower in the country out of high school,” said Iowa State throws coach John Dagata.
Daniel Newhouse- West Aurora High School, Aurora, Ill.
Newhouse placed sixth at the 2006 AAU National Junior Olympic Games and fifth in the 2007 AAU National Junior Olympic Games in the javelin throw. He earned the bronze medal in the javeliln at the 2007 Junior Olympic USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He holds personal records of 189-04.00 in the javelin and 131-01.00 in the discus. Newshouse is a member of the Aurora Flyers Track Club.
“Dan could potentially throw a collegiate regional-qualifying mark in the javelin out of high school,” Dagata said.
Ian Warner- Birchmont Park Collegiate Institute, Ontario, Canada
Warner captured the bronze medal in the 60-meter dash at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. He also is a member of the Canadian junior national team. He owns personal bests of 6.83 in the 60-meters, 10.60 in the 100-meters and 21.95 in the 200-meters.
“He is the blue chip athlete that we hoped to add to our men's sprints crew," said Ihmels. "I am excited about seeing him in cardinal and gold.”
Matthew Brinkley- Meade High School, Fort Meade, Maryland
Brinkley earned two state championships as a member of his high school's 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relay squads, and won the state crown in the 2008 Maryland indoor state meet in the 800-meter run. He ran personal bests of 14.6 in the 100-meter hurdles, 39.6 in the 300-meter hurdles, 54.2 in the 400-meter hurdles and 1:55.30 in the 800-meters.
“He has seen great success in both relays and hurdles and we are excited about what he brings to our group,” Ihmels said.
Tony Johnson- New Prague High School, Elko, Minn.
Johnson will focus on the jumps events at Iowa State. He was all-state in all three jumping events, long, triple and high jump. Johnson scored 17 of 18 of his team's points at the 2007 state meet. He is a three-time all-conference performer in track and field, as well as two-time all-conference honoree in basketball. Johnson's personal records include, 22-09.50 in the long jump, 45-04.00 in the triple jump and 6-04 in the high jump.
“With his versatility, Tony is the type of athlete that we can begin to build our jumps group around,” Ihmels said.
Women
Kianna Elahi- Millard North High School, Omaha, Neb.
Elahi ran a 43.04 in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2007 Class A State Championships, setting an all-class state record and capturing the state title in the event. She competed in eight events in high school track. Won the silver and the bronze in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meters respectively at the 2007 Class A State Championships. Claims a 14.90 career best in the 100-meter hurdles and a 57.95 personal record in the 400-meter run.
“She's a standout athlete in the Midwest," said Ihmels. "With Kianna and Kersten Thoorgard, ISU will be a dominant force in the 400 meter hurdles for years to come.”
Meghin Krambeck- Creston High School, Creston, Iowa
In her first year running 100-meter hurdles, Krambeck finished seventh in the event at the 2007 3A Iowa State Championships. Krambeck owns career best of 14.78 in the 100-meter hurdles. Named all-conference in basketball.
“Meghin is a natural hurdler with a lot of untapped athletic potential," said Ihmels. "She has a chance to be great.”
Kari Calhoun- Coppell High School, Coppell, Texas
Calhoun competed in six events at Coppell high school. She scored 24 points for her squad at the 2007 UIL District 6-5A Championship. Calhoun ran the second leg of the school record-breaking 4x400-meter relay team that clocked in at 3:58.64. Career bests include: 12.10 in the 100-meter dash, 25.10 in the 200-meter dash and 57.07 in the 400-meter dash.
“She can compete at a high level in every sprint event and that is a true sign of Big 12 talent,” said Ihmels.
Christine Fries- Eastview High School, Apple Valley, Minn.
Fries achieved all-state and all-conference honors in 2005 and 2006 in the 800-meter run. She holds a personal record of 2:14.90 in the 800-meter run. Fries lettered in track and field, as well as hockey and soccer, and achieved all-conference in both.
“She is a tremendous athlete with great competitive instincts,” said Ihmels. “She is going to make an immediate impact with our middle distance group and hopefully over time become a top cross country runner.”
Laishema Hampton ? St. Louis Park High School, St. Louis Park, Minn.
Hampton was a state champion in 2006 in the shot put with a toss of 39-05.25. She finished runner-up in the event in 2007, but bettered her mark, throwing a 41-03.75. Hampton placed third in the 2007 Minnesota AA state meet in the discus, with a personal best toss of 135. She holds a personal best of 42-05.00 in the shot put. Hampton also ran the 100-meter dash, with a personal record of 12.9.
“I think Laishema's combination of speed and power could produce national-qualifying marks,” Dagata said.
Danielle Frere- Muscatine High School, Muscatine, Iowa
Frere earned the silver medal in the shot put at the 4A Iowa state meet, with a throw of 42-08. She claims prep bests of 44-00.25 in the shot put and 125-00 in the discus throw. She has two older brothers who play for the Cyclone football team, Nick and Nate Frere.
“She could potentially be the best female thrower in the state,” Dagata said.
Katie Thompson- Fort Dodge High School, Fort Dodge, Iowa
Thompson is a three-time state qualifier for cross country, three-time state qualifier for track and field and two-time qualifier for the Drake Relays. She is the CIML conference record holder in the 3k and the reigning conference champion in the 3,000- and 1,500-meters. Thompson earned 10th place overall at the 2007 state cross country meet. Thompson's personal bests include, 4:52.00 in the 1,500-meter run, 10:25.00 in the 3,000-meter run and 18:52 in cross country on a 5k course.
“Katie has the ability and credentials to be a difference-maker on our team,” Ihmels said. “We have seen her at our camps and we are excited about the work ethic she is going to bring.”
Callan Jacobson ? Benton Community High School, Van Horne, Iowa
Overall, Jacobson has five state titles, three in the 200-meter dash and two in the 100-meter dash. She earned two state championships at the 2007 3A Iowa state meet in the 100- and 200-meters. Jacobson earned prep bests of 12.01 in the 100-meters, 25.15 in the 200-meters and 58.5 in the 400-meters.
“In Callan we're adding one of the most decorated Iowa high school sprinters," said Ihmels. "She is the type of athlete that we can build our sprint group around.”
Jordon Andreassen ? North Polk High School, Polk City, Iowa
Recruited to ISU to compete in the combined events, Andreassen is a two-time state champion as a member of North Polk's 4x200-meter and 4x100-meter relays. She earned fifth place in the 200-meters, and seventh place in the high jump at the Iowa 2A state meet. Andreassen's prep bests include, 5-06 in the high jump, 12.36 in the 100-meters and 25.66 in the 200-meters.
“Jordon has outstanding athletic ability and that makes her one of the top multi-event recruits in the state of Iowa,” said Ihmels.
