STATE COLLEGE, Penn. ? The Iowa State gymnastics team ended its season at the NCAA Northeast Regional, finishing sixth with a score of 194.200.
It was a mixed bag for the Cyclones. The team received outstanding performances out of Megan Barnes, Jody McKellar and Nikki Dilbert, but there wasn't quite enough to recover from a couple costly falls.
“This is disappointing in the sense that we didn't do what we set out to do,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “This meet was similar to the way we have performed throughout the season as we had to count a fall here and there. The upside is everyone returns next year and hopefully they will have all grown up with the experience they gained tonight.”
Barnes finished in a tie for third on the vault with a score of 9.875. Her performance comes on the heals of a 9.900 recorded at the Big 12 Championship two weeks ago. McKellar posted a career-high 9.825 on beam, good for a tie for tenth. Dilbert used three scores of 9.800 to post an all-around total of 39.175, good for seventh.
Georgia won the team title with a score of 197.775, earning individual championships on all four events. Denver placed second with a score of 195.775 to earn the second automatic bid from the region into the NCAA National Championship. Host Penn State was third, Auburn fourth and BYU fifth with Iowa State placing sixth.
The Cyclones started the meet on floor, where they put up a 48.200. Jasmine Thompson, fresh off her third-place finish in the all-around at the Big 12 Championship, led ISU with a 9.825. Dilbert wasn't far behind with a score of 9.800 while Melanie Tham recorded a 9.725. Auburn recorded a 48.850 on bars to hold the team lead after the first rotation.
Iowa State moved to vault for the second rotation where it scored a 48.650. Barnes led the way with a 9.875 while Dilbert put together a score of 9.800. ISU held the lead in the team standings after the first two rotations as the Cyclones and Auburn were the only teams to have competed on two events. Georgia opened the meet on bars in the second rotation, putting up a score of 49.500.
The Cyclones had a bye in the third rotation. After three rotations all six teams had competed in two events. ISU was in fifth with a score of 96.850. Georgia led the competition with a 99.075 and Penn State was second with a 97.725.
Iowa State hit its stride on bars in the fourth rotation, notching a season-best 48.950. Four Cyclones scored 9.800 to help the team climb back into the hunt. Ashley Kent tied a season-best with her 9.800, and Dilbert, Maccani and Thompson added matching scores. Barnes recorded a score of 9.750. With Georgia getting a bye in this rotation, Denver took the team lead with a 146.725. The Cyclones were in fourth with a team score of 145.800.
ISU was on beam for their final rotation of the meet, scoring a 48.400. Jody McKellar came through big for the Cyclones, earning a career-best 9.825. Dilbert and Thompson added matching scores of 9.775 while Sweetin recorded a 9.725. Auburn moved into the team lead with one rotation to go, fighting with Georgia, Denver and Penn State for the top two spots and berths in the NCAA National Championship.
