AMES, Iowa ? The 2007-08 Iowa State women's golf season was a year full of record setting performances and mixed emotions. At one point during the fall, the Cyclones found themselves ranked among Golfweek's top-30 Division I teams, the highest ranking for an Iowa State team in over a decade.
ISU women's golf made new strides during the 2007-08 season, setting many team and individual school records. The team carded three of the school's top-10 18-hole rounds and three of the top-12 54-hole totals in school history.
On the individual side, Pennapa Pulsawath continued to ink her way into the school record books. Three of her 54-hole tournament totals rank in the top 10 in ISU history. In addition, Pulsawath's season stroke average of 76.5 ranks second in school history.
Seniors Kendra Hanson and Karly Pinder closed out their collegiate careers as the fifth and 10th most experienced golfers in school history based on rounds played. Pinder's 79.4 career stroke average ranks sixth-best in school history, while Hanson's 80.3 career stroke average ranks 11th. Pinder and Hanson also excelled in the classroom, earning first-team academic all-Big 12 honors for the third consecutive season.
The fall season was highlighted by a trio of top-three finishes at the Lady Badger Invitational, Ron Moore Intercollegiate and Challenge at Wolfdancer.
“One exciting part of the fall season was that we had a different player finish low for us every week,” said ISU head coach Christie Martens. “That showed the depth and talent of this team. They really came together as a unit throughout the fall.”
The emergence of freshman Laurence Herman added major depth to the Cyclones. She posted three top-11 finishes during the fall season and was second on the team with a 78.2 stroke average.
Pulsawath, ISU's returning stroke average leader, posted a strong fall campaign by placing in the top-14 in all four tournaments, including a second place finish at the Lady Badger Invite.
During the spring season, the Cyclones posted a fourth place finish at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. Pulsawath paced the Cyclones for the second straight week, carding a three-round total of 218 to tie for third. Pulsawath's career low 54-hole total of 218 ranks as the seventh best in school history. The native of Bangkok, Thailand won Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Month honors for the month of March.
Iowa State returns four golfers with playing experience for 2008-09, including the top stroke average leaders from last season in Pulsawath and Herman. Sophomores Victoria Stefansen and Katelynn Hogenson will also look to be team leaders and major contributors next season.
