AMES, Iowa - The grind of a college athletic season is grueling for even the best organized and self-motivated student-athlete, but Iowa State women's basketball player Shellie Mosman is making the regular season look like a walk in the park this summer.
The junior-to-be is in the midst of a rare summer accounting internship for students going into just their third year of school, and her days are filled from start to finish. Mosman is working for Deloitte Accounting Firm in Des Moines, while trying to keep up her progress on the court.
She begins each day with a 4:30 a.m. wake-up call. Weight lifting and conditioning begins at 5 a.m., and she is in Des Moines by 8 a.m. to start her day at Deloitte. At 5 p.m. she heads back to Ames and straight to the gym two nights a week to play pick-up games with her teammates.
“This firm is a great choice for me,” Mosman said. “Basketball is a high priority for me right now, but it is great to know that I can look down the road and have a direction over the next few years.”
The Carroll, Iowa, native is on schedule to finish her accounting degree in just three years and is set to have her master's degree when her playing career comes to a close in the spring of 2010. Mosman has completed her first two years at Iowa State with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and only settled into an accounting major a year ago.
“I've changed my mind about five different times,” she said. “I thought about going into teaching, chiropractic care, being an athletics director, but I decided accounting would be a perfect fit for my personality. I love crunching numbers and knowing there is a solution. I've always been a perfectionist. And it's a very good field to get into.”
Mosman has jumped into her future career head first. Most accounting students do their internship between their junior and senior year and most participate during the heavy tax season in the spring. But because of her basketball obligations, Mosman was able to work out an alternative plan after meeting with Deloitte during a fall career fair on the ISU campus.
“I am working in the tax field,” Mosman said. “I haven't even taken a tax class. They usually don't take people until after their junior year, and they usually want you during the spring tax season. But they have been good to me and let me do it this summer. I have learned a lot very quickly.”
While preparing herself for the “real world,” Mosman is also focused on preparing herself and her teammates for the upcoming basketball season.
“My main goal for the summer is to help the freshmen,” she said. “I was a role player last year, and I want to improve my game and help the team in anyway that I can. The team is getting along really well and working hard. Things are falling into place just like they should at this point.”
