AMES, Iowa ? Chris Williams, a former volunteer assistant for the Iowa State tennis team, was promoted to full-time assistant coach status by head coach Armando Espinosa.
“We are very excited to add Chris Williams to this year's staff,” Espinosa said. “His enthusiasm and intensity are only a few of the characteristics he possesses that will make our tennis program reach the next level. Chris' familiarity with our student-athletes and my coaching style make him a valuable addition. His involvement with the Ames tennis community and the surrounding areas will also help attract more fans to our matches.”
Williams, who as volunteered with the Cyclones last season, served as Buena Vista University's head men's tennis coach in 2004, while he was still a student. He is a 2004 graduate of Buena Vista with a degree in sports and fitness management and a minor in business.
“I'm very excited to join the Iowa State athletics department,” Williams said. “I have great respect for Armando and I am ready to join him moving forward. This is a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes in a full-time role.”
Most recently, Williams was the Director of Junior Tennis at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center and a team coach for Iowa District Boys and Girls 12's. As Director of Junior tennis he managed clinics, assisted in organizing and running district tournaments and coached players in district and sectional tournaments. He has coached 16 players in the Iowa District.
As well as serving as the head tennis professional at the 7 Flags Fitness and Racquet Club in 2004-05, he also completed a strength and conditioning internship at Central College in 2004.
“Our student-athletes enjoyed working with him last season and they are very excited to have him as part of the staff,” Espinosa added.
