DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior women's basketball player Heather Ezell was named the Iowa Games 2008 Marty McHone Female Athlete of the Year. She will be honored at a reception Tuesday during the annual Iowa Sports Foundation sponsorship reception at the Iowa Hall of Pride.
Ezell organized a team of former, current and future Iowa State players to participate in the 2008 Iowa Games in Ames. Her team, the “Twister Sisters” won the adult women's basketball gold medal. She also volunteered her time as a venue coordinator during the regional competitions in June, as well as the finals in July.
"It is such an honor to receive this award,” Ezell said. “I really enjoyed participating in the Iowa Games this summer. It is a great organization and to be named the Female Athlete of the Year is something special."
According to the Iowa Sports Foundation, “Ezell's commitment and accomplishments in the sport of basketball, as well as her volunteerism for the sport have earned her a spot in Iowa Games history as the 2008 Marty McHone Female Athlete of the Year."
“Heather is the kind of young person that draws people to the sport of women's basketball,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “She is always giving it her all and performs to the highest standards. Sports have allowed her to impact the lives of others.”
Ron Peterson of Waukee was named the 2008 Iowa Games Male Athlete of the Year.
The Marty McHone Athlete of the Year award is in honor of McHone, who lost her battle with cancer in the summer of 2002. This award is presented not only for athleticism but also for good character, good citizenship and good sportsmanship. McHone had participated in every Iowa Games track meet, and was named the Iowa Games Female Athlete of the Year in 1996. Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is the proud sponsor of the Marty McHone Athlete of the Year award.
