Another school year has begun and the Cyclone women's basketball team is already back hard at work, preparing for the upcoming season. In order to give Cyclone fans an inside look at the Iowa State women's basketball team, head coach Bill Fennelly and members of the ISU team will be posting a weekly blog at cyclones.com on Tuesday of each week throughout the school year.
Fans will have a chance to hear directly from Coach Fennelly throughout the year about how practice is going, how the team is doing during the season, and what he sees as the staples of the ISU women's basketball program. Players will talk to you each week about their perspective of school life, practices, games, and the daily hurdles of being a Division I student-athlete.
Genesis Lightbourne talks to you this week about the highlights of being an upperclassman. She also lets Cyclone fans know what they need to see in her hometown (Las Vegas) while visiting this week for the football game. Next week check back to hear from Coach Fennelly as he updates you on the progress of the 2008-09 Cyclone squad.
Hello Cyclone Fans!
Following Nicky's blog (last week), I've got some big shoes to fill; although literally, we wear the same size. (Yet notice the four-inch height differential, how does that work?)
It's been a pretty smooth transition becoming an upperclassman. A true benefit is knowing what to expect, as well as what's expected of us during preseason. It also helps to find the majority of class locations with relative ease.
I've been the youngest on the team for two years, but that honor is now passed on to Claire (Rockall). After two years on the team, I now have more of a grasp on what it takes to be not only an athlete who plays basketball, but an athletic basketball player.
The potential of this team is astounding. We are approaching our fourth week of preseason and we are hard at work. As Coach (Fennelly) says, “We've got people with talent from across the country to across the world!”
I just celebrated my birthday this past week, and am proud to say that I am no longer a teenager. After the midnight phone calls and texts from my friends in Iowa and then two hours later from my friends and family in Vegas, I was just too excited to sleep. I had to be up for 5:45am weights. But nevertheless, I skipped down after running up our last hill while watching the sunrise. I am quite the cheerful person in the morning, possibly to the point of annoying some of my teammates. Ha Ha.
It has been brought to my attention that many people are thrilled to be traveling to Las Vegas this week to watch the Cyclone football team take on UNLV! Whether looking for entertainment before or after the game, Vegas is a great source for it. Caesar's Palace is an amazing hotel with plenty of forum shops, scenery galore, and is one of my favorites. The MGM Grand has a really cool lion habitat. It's amazing to see lions that close with only glass as a separation.
I absolutely love to eat, and there are numerous eating places with plenty of variety. My personal favorites are the buffets and there is one in just about every hotel. Lastly, if you love gambling, Las Vegas has the only airport I've been in with slot machines as you exit the plane. Oh goodness, what a city!
With all of that said, safe travels for those heading out to Vegas. Say hello to my Vegas friends and family for me. I can't wait to see them at Christmas, but I'm enjoying it here with my Cyclone family. Thanks to all the fans!!!
