The first and only off-week of the season came this week. The Cyclone football team was given Friday and Saturday off to recuperate and be with family. In order to give Cyclone fans an inside look at the Iowa State football team, senior wide receiver Euseph Messiah will be posting a weekly blog at cyclones.com on Friday of each week throughout the football season.
Messiah has a clean slate to talk all things related to his life, academics, Cyclone football and other daily hurdles of being a Division I student-athlete.
Week 5
Hey everyone, Euseph Messiah here! Another week has passed by for the Cyclones and unfortunately we suffered a loss to UNLV last week in Las Vegas, 34-31 in OT. Now, we would have loved to have a different outcome coming out of this game, but we now know that we have to focus our complete attention to the Kansas Jayhawks, our opponent next week.

Although it may not seem like it, positive things did surface from the UNLV game. We came back from a 21-point deficit, and tied the game 28-28 and forced the game into overtime. I think this shows our drive and determination to rise up when things are down, something you wouldn't have seen last year early in the season.
This week of preparation for us was a little different since it was an open week and our mentality during practice was all about getting back to the basics. We focused on techniques, simple adjustments, and worked hard in the weight room so we could be prepared for the Big 12 mentally and physically.
In my opinion, an open week can be good and bad from a player's perspective. Obviously, it's a positive week because we can get an extra week of practice in and the players that may be a little banged up can have an extra week to heal. At the same time, we have a sour taste in our mouths and mentally, we want to get back on the field and play another opponent. Nonetheless, an open week now works for us because it gives us a chance to re-group and collect ourselves as a team. I believe we've made the proper corrections and adjustments and we're ready to start Big 12 conference play.
I hope that everyone who took the trip to Las Vegas to support us had a safe trip back. I know I speak for the whole team when I say that the support from our fans has to be the best in the nation. I heard that there were around 10,000 fans from Iowa State and that is absolutely PHENOMENAL! We love how every week, our fans do their part and support us throughout every game and that is something that doesn't go unnoticed. Hopefully, we'll get the same turnout for the Kansas game next weekend! Until next time, GO CYCLONES!
