The Cyclones were balanced offensively, but they were led by senior Heather Ezell with 15 points, all from three-point range. Freshman Ashley Arlen turned in 13 points, Alison Lacey had nine and Nicky Wieben contributed eight. Kelsey Bolte led ISU on the glass with nine rebounds.
Iowa State shot 42.3 percent from the field and was 7-for-19 from three-point range. The Cyclone defense held MU to 30 percent shooting and Bekah Mills was Mizzou's top scorer with nine points. ISU outrebounded the Tigers, 45-33.
“I thought we guarded hard, and we had prepared really hard the last two days of practice,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “This was a game we had to win. Defensively we locked into their three (key) players early and we did a good job at that.”
Iowa State took a 32-14 lead to the locker room after holding Missouri to 23.1 percent shooting from the field over the first 20 minutes. Lacey and Ezell each had nine points at the break to lead the Cyclones.
Mizzou hit a three on its first possession of the game, but ISU answered with an 8-0 run including back-to-back three-pointers by Ezell. The Cyclones went cold from there, going the next eight minutes without a field goal, but Mizzou didn't have much going offensive either as it cut the lead (9-7).
Iowa State went on a 15-2 run to open up a 24-9 lead behind scoring from five different players. Shakara Jones scored and added a free throw for the Tigers to make the score 26-14 with two minutes to go, but Iowa State scored six unanswered points to take an 18-point lead into the break.
After an ISU score coming out of the half, Mizzou put up back-to-back field goals (35-18), but the Cyclones went on another 8-0 run to push their lead to 28 (46-18) with 13 minutes to go. MU hit a pair of treys and a free throw to cut the margin (47-24), but the Cyclones were good for another 9-0 run to stretch the lead, 56-25.
The Cyclones will travel to Nebraska Saturday for an 8 p.m. game that will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. Iowa State will return home Saturday, Jan. 31, for a rematch against Kansas State. The 1998-99 Iowa State Elite Eight team will be recognized at halftime of that contest.
