Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State is coming off an exciting 55-51 win over 20th-ranked Vanderbilt Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones led by as many as 12 in the second half, but the Commodores closed to within three points twice with under a minute left. ISU pulled out the win by hitting free throws, and snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cyclones against top 25 squads at home.
? The Cyclones have two games remaining in their eight-game home stretch. Following the game against IPFW (Jan. 7), Iowa State will open Big 12 Conference action against No. 21 Oklahoma State (Jan. 10). The Cyclones will hit the road for the first time in over a month when they travel to Baylor (Jan. 14).
? ISU senior Heather Ezell joined the 1,000-point club in the win over Drake. Fellow senior Nicky Wieben needs just three points to join Ezell in the elite group. Eighteen other players have reached the monumental 1,000-point mark in Iowa State school history.
? The Cyclones are 11-2 this season and 7-0 at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State won its first four games of the campaign, before losing to fifth-ranked Stanford in Hawaii and Iowa on the road. Iowa State has won its last six straight and have won 39 straight regular-season non-conference contests at Hilton Coliseum.
? ISU is in its 36th season of women's basketball and its 14th season under head coach Bill Fennelly. Iowa State is 528-487 in school history.
? Iowa State is coming off a 21-13 campaign in 2007-08. The Cyclones made it to the second round of the NCAA Championship a year ago, defeating Georgia Tech in the first round and falling to Rutgers in the second. ISU finished 7-9 in the Big 12 for a seventh-place tie with Texas in the final league standings. The Cyclones made it to the Big 12 Championship semifinals by defeating Colorado, 76-50, and 15th-ranked and regular-season Big 12 champ Kansas State, 66-65, in an overtime thriller.
? Head coach Bill Fennelly is 291-134 at Iowa State and in his 14th season with the Cyclones. He is 457-187 in his head coaching career, which began at Toledo in 1988.
The Series
? Iowa State is 2-0 all-time against IPFW, with the wins coming in Ames in the 2004 and 2005 seasons. The Cyclones defeated the Mastodons, 113-45, in 2004, and 87-68 in the Cyclone Classic in 2005.
? In the Cyclones victory in 2005, Heather Ezell and Nicky Wieben (both freshmen that season) helped lead the way for Iowa State. Ezell scored 22 points and Wieben added 15 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Lyndsey Medders also set the Iowa State single-game school record for assists with 16 dimes.
A Closer Look At IPFW
? IPFW has lost five straight after falling to North Dakota State, 63-59, Monday night. IPFW holds a 2-11 overall record and has already started Summit League action, with a 1-3 record in conference play.
? IPFW is averaging 58.3 points per game this season, while allowing opponents to average 68.5 ppg. The Mastodons are shooting 36.3 percent from the floor, but their opponents are hitting at a 44.4 percent clip. IPFW is also being outrebounded by a margin of 10.2 boards per game.
? Three Mastodon players are averaging nine points per game or better. Jordan Zuppe and Courtney Reed have hit 32 and 31 three-pointers, respectively, this season. As a team, IPFW ranks eighth in the nation with 8.2 treys per contest.
? Sophomore Chelsey Jackson is IPFW's leading scorer, posting 13.5 points per game. She is shooting 45.6 percent from the field and has hit eight treys. Jackson has scored in double figures nine times this season, including a career-high 20 points in the Mastodons' loss at Wright State.
? Chris Paul is in his third season at the helm of the IPFW program. Paul has posted a 20-42 overall record as a head coach. Paul is in his eighth season overall in various roles on the Mastodon staff.

Last Time Out
Iowa State put up a solid defensive effort and Alison Lacey and Heather Ezell provided all the offensive firepower it needed to knock off 20th-ranked Vanderbilt, 55-51, last Saturday. The ISU defense forced Vanderbilt into 27 miscues, including 18 in the first half, and held Christina Wirth, the Commodores' leading scorer, to just seven points. Lacey worked her way out of a shooting slump as she led the Cyclones with a season-high 20 points, going 3-of-6 from three-point range. Ezell added 18 points for ISU, with a 5-of-8 performance from the field and 3-of-5 mark from long range. Amanda Nisleit led Iowa State on the boards with five rebounds. The Commodores ran off seven straight points to cut the lead to 52-49 with 52 seconds left. Lacey hit two free throws before VU found Wirth under the basket with 10.4 seconds remaining. Lacey, who escaped the foul until there was 6.9 seconds left, hit the first free throw to put Iowa State up by four. A Vandy three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.
The Votes Are In
Iowa State received enough votes in the Associated Press poll this week to rank 27th, after going to weeks without a vote. Last week, ISU received votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25. It received enough to fall into 28th place in the rankings.
Looking for 1,000
The Cyclones could have three different players hit the 1,000-point milestone this season. Heather Ezell (1,083) was the first to hit the mark in the win over Drake. Nicky Wieben (997) and Alison Lacey (878) are both within striking distance of the mark as well. With the addition of Ezell, 19 players in school history have already reached the mark.
Nationally Speaking
(As of Jan. 5) Iowa State ranks 10th nationally with its eight three-pointers per game, but that is not all the Cyclones are doing well. ISU also ranks 17th in rebound margin, 36th in fewest personal fouls per game and 25th in assist-to-turnover ratio. Alison Lacey ranks 55th in assist-to-turnover ratio and Heather Ezell ranks 29th with 2.6 treys per contest and 65th with her three-point percentage (.391).
Making A Mark
With each blocked shot Nicky Wieben records this season, she adds to her Iowa State career record, which currently sits at 171. In the final game before her injury last season, Wieben surpassed Angie Welle's previous ISU career mark of 155. Wieben has also moved up the Big 12 career list, passing Baylor's Steffanie Blackmon (159, 2002-05) for 10th place. Three other current players in the Big 12 are also in the career top 10.
Jocelyn Anderson also ranks in Iowa State's career top 10 for blocked shots, sitting in a tie for sixth place with 87. She now needs five to move into a tie for fifth place with Stephannie Smith (92).
Heather Ezell ranks 14th in Iowa State career scoring with 1,083 points. Against Vanderbilt she moved ahead of Etta Burns (1,074). She is 14 points shy of 13th place (Carmen Jaspers, 1,097). Ezell is also moving up the ISU career three-pointer list. She moved into fourth place against Drake and now has 233 in her career. She surpassed Lindsey Wilson (214) for fourth place. She needs eight to move up to third place with Megan Ronhovde (241).
Raining Threes
Iowa State's 18 three-pointers against Detroit tied the Iowa State single-game record previously set against Missouri Feb. 19, 2000. ISU's 48 three-point attempts vs. the Titans broke the single-game school record. The previous record was 44 against Liberty set on Dec. 9, 2000. Heather Ezell contributed eight of those three-pointers, but that mark was two shy of her career high. She has hit seven or more three-pointers in a single game five times in her career.
Iowa State has hit 10 or more treys in four games this season and Ezell has hit three or more treys in eight of Iowa State's 13 games this season.
Turning Up the Heat
Iowa State is forcing opponents into 18.1 turnovers per game this season, which is the most since ISU opponents averaged 18.3 per game in 1994-95. The Cyclones forced opponents into an average of 12.8 turnovers per game last season in comparison. Minnesota committed 26 turnovers and ISU picked off 14 steals against the Gophers. The Cyclones trumped both of the those numbers as they forced Niagara into 30 turnovers (the most opponent turnovers since forcing 30 against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Dec. 17, 1995) and picked off 18 steals (the most since recording 20 vs. UMKC on Nov. 18, 1997). ISU did it again against Vanderbilt, forcing 27 miscues by the Commodores.
